Wolfman razors

I use a Gillette slim adjustable, in the past i used a fat handled tech. Anyways i do beard reduction first pass on setting 7, second pass 5, last setting 3 for cleanups. I am intrigued by the Wolfman razors. I am confused about all the options and especially blade gaps, i know nothing about blade gaps. I would definitely want a 90mm wrh2 (hollow) handle. I also would definitely want a closed comb/standard safety bar. I read that the wr1 has more blade feel than the wr2?? Could someone please explain this? Is the blade protruding from the wr1 more?

This is a lot of cash to spend to not knowing what to buy, although i am undecided. About blade gaps. I don't like blade feel or overly aggressive razors. I read that one can get for example of what i assume (??) to be mild to mid blade gaps: .67, .61, .75. I do know and understand that blade gap, and exposure is not the only thing that can make a razor aggressive or less aggressive, head design/geometry has something to do with it as well. So the Wr2 has less blade feel , and a thicker profile than the wr1. Is the Wr2 much more thicker than the wr1? So compared to a fat handled tech which is closer to tye slimness of the Gillette tech? So are 'all' blade gaps available on both the wr2 and wr1 or only certain gaps for each head? So would a Wr1 with a blade gap of .75 shave much different than a .75 wr2? Based on what i am used to (a Gillette slim) what setting does a .61 equal to on a Gillette slim adjustable? Also what would a .75 equal to on the Gillette slim?

I know i am used to an adjustable. I really enjoy the adjustability for each pass. If i want a Wolfman, i would not want something overly aggressive, but very efficient though, not to aggressive to go atg on the stache and other areas. Could i have some help putting all this together? I believe one can dial in there technique with any razor and make it do exactly what a adjustable razor can do.

Mike

Ps
i am also confused about this: I read somewhere that for example a wr1 .80 blade gap has more blade feel than the wr2 1.15 blade gap and is also more efficient than the wr2 1.15 blade gap?! Looks like the larger (1.15) blade gap would be more aggressive?!

Welcome to the wonderfully obscure world of the Wolman razor.

Good luck. 🙂

The wr1 is a much thinner head. If you are looking to get something with a head profile even remotely similar to the Tech, the wr1 is the way to go.

Yes, a wr1 with a 0.75 gap would be much more aggressive than a wr2 with the same gap. It's not close.

Based on what you have said about your preferences in a razor, you probably would enjoy a wr1 with a very small gap, like maybe the 0.61.

You should consider trying the Lupo 58, first, as I believe the Lupo is based on the WR1 and by some reports shaves basically the same (at a fraction of the price). If you love it and still want to spend Wolfman money, you’ll then have a much better idea of which Wolfman to buy.

Wr1 has a .48 gap i have read. Wander what setting that would equate to on a slim adjustable?

So am i on the right track: Wr1 at 0.75 and wr2 0.75 blade gap (meaning the distance between the safety bar and the blade) would be the same. The only thing that makes the w21 more aggressive is the amount of blade that's protruding from the razor is greater/more exposure than the wr2??

You're on the right track.

WR1 Gap/Blade Exposure
.48 = -0.14
.54 = -0.06
.61 = +0.02
.67 = +0.10
.74 = +0.18
.80 = +0.28

WR2 Gap/Blade Exposure
.75 = -0.150mm
.85 = -0.09mm
.95 = -0.05
1.05 = +.01
1.15 = .06
1.25 = .11
1.35 = .16
1.45 = .21
1.55 = .26

My WR1 .74 has much more blade feel than my WR2 1.05 or even the WR2 1.25

I agree with @kingfisher that the wr1 .61 might be suitable if you prefer a thin head. The WR1 is the easiest razor I've ever used to get right up under my nostrils with the Razorock SS Lupo coming in a close second. I don't mean ATG or XTG contortions, just place the edge/corner of the WR1 right up in there at the slightest angle WTG and shave it right off. The WR2 (although very smooth) is a more bulky head and lacks the nimbleness of the WR1.

I think the Slim gap (as far as I can find) on setting 3 is 0.022 inch, so 0.55mm and 0.017 inch or 0.43mm at setting 2. I have no idea on the blade exposure for the Slim.

What other razor does a wr1 Wolfman . 48 equal to?
I read online that for example merkur 34 c is less aggressive than a wr1 .48, this adds to the confusion.

Anyways for example: So wr1 is .74 and wr2 is .75 also around roughly the same at wr1 : So do both blade gaps have the same gap/distance between the safety bar and the blade? So the only thing that makes the wr1 more aggressive is the amount of blade thats protruding (exposure) from the razor to the skin?

Perhaps someone else can answer that for you. My experience has only been with the wr1 .74

I think yes, the gap should be the same in your example. The majority of the aggressiveness of the wr1 would be the greater blade exposure at smaller gaps. However, there might be other factors at play with the wr2. I've read others claim that even the wr2 1.55 is a surprisingly smooth shaver. Perhaps something about that head design... ? I can't really say.

@1e4 gave a great suggestion above with the Lupo .58 gap version. It would be a much less expensive way to test a very similar head design before you commit serious money toward a wr1 Wolfman.

edit: I actually forgot to mention another great option, the Guerrilla razor by Wolfman. It would be my 2nd thinnest head followed by the Lupo and it shaves very similar to the WR1.

You are correct that the aggressive feel comes from its more blade-forward design.

If I had to guess, i'd say that a wr1 at 0.61 would be roughly equivalent to a Slim at setting 4 or 5, but a lot more nimble.

I also agree that you could try the 0.58 Lupo first, as an inexpensive was to find out if the wr1 will work for you.

I run my Gillette adjustables on seven for both passes. I have a WR1 .61 and a WR2 in the 1.05 gap. The WR1 has more blade feel than my WR2. I would say it has a bit more than a Slim on seven. Both give great shaves.
Confusing 😕. I believe you, but i dont get it?? How a wr1 gap at .61 would be more aggressive/more blade feel than a wr2 at 1.05

So is the blade gap on a wr2 1.05 larger or smaller than the wr1 1.05 ,meaning the space between the safety bar and the blade??

WR1 .61 has higher blade exposure than WR2 1.05. Both head geometries are different too

I can only say the WR-1, and WR-2 are different Razors, so it is like Two Tennis/Running shoes both size 11.5, but each is different, so one fit your foot better, because that is your brand.

Think of the WR-1, and WR-2 as two totally different Razor both come from Wolfman, like Cheverlot Blazer, and Suburban, both are Chevys, both are SUV's totally different.

I don’t have Wolfman but I believe it’s more aggressive not because of the gap but because its more blade forward.

So is the blade gap on a wr2 1.05 larger or smaller than the wr1 1.05 ,meaning the space is the safety bar and the blade??

Same blade gap 1.05 is 1.05

I meant to say: So is the blade gap on a wr2 1.05 larger or smaller than a wr1 .61?
The heads are designed differently... so the gap on a WR2 1.05 "is" larger than a 0.61 on the WR1.... That is the only thing that makes sense.... What you'll have to wrap your mind around is... because they are different designs, the WR1 0.61 gap will be more efficient/aggressive than the WR2 1.05.
