Should have grabbed a pic before leaving the house, but, I have a pretty nice Gillette New from eBay, which had a couple of spots where the Gold Plating was worn off. (The base & handle still have darn good gold plate on them). In cleaning, I took a non-abrasive, very mild polish and with virtually no rubbing, removed most of the gold off the top of the cap. - I barely rubbed, and the small patch that remains, tells me the gold plate may have been a lacquer, or that's the way it appears to me, and that lacquer coating was perhaps worn off. (It's very small area that remains gold on the cap). I was shocked, as the handle and base had no trouble, as I'd done them first.
I'm looking at my options, and wanted some input. As I see it, I can do one of the following:
1) I can just keep the cap polished and have a two-tone copper/brass cap on the gold razor. I know lots of members have New & Old models like that. (It shaves fine, used it the last two mornings, possibly the best OC shave I've had).
2) I could have it re-plated professionally, of course this is the most expensive option, and makes a great deal on a razor not so great. (I paid under $22 + a couple bucks shipping).
3) I can re-plate it myself! - I've seen a couple razors two tone, silver and gold, and there are some silver plate options that give good results. (There's also Nickel plate setups that are less than option #2, but would leave supplies for future endeavors, if I use Nickel, as opposed to silver).
I'm thinking or leaning towards buying some of the Silver Plate stuff, which is basically activated by rubbing it onto the base metal. (Copper and Brass are the two it works best with). So what do you think, help me decide what to do.
