Gillette New Cap, re-plate or not?

Should have grabbed a pic before leaving the house, but, I have a pretty nice Gillette New from eBay, which had a couple of spots where the Gold Plating was worn off. (The base & handle still have darn good gold plate on them). In cleaning, I took a non-abrasive, very mild polish and with virtually no rubbing, removed most of the gold off the top of the cap. - I barely rubbed, and the small patch that remains, tells me the gold plate may have been a lacquer, or that's the way it appears to me, and that lacquer coating was perhaps worn off. (It's very small area that remains gold on the cap). I was shocked, as the handle and base had no trouble, as I'd done them first.

I'm looking at my options, and wanted some input. As I see it, I can do one of the following:

1) I can just keep the cap polished and have a two-tone copper/brass cap on the gold razor. I know lots of members have New & Old models like that. (It shaves fine, used it the last two mornings, possibly the best OC shave I've had).

2) I could have it re-plated professionally, of course this is the most expensive option, and makes a great deal on a razor not so great. (I paid under $22 + a couple bucks shipping).

3) I can re-plate it myself! - I've seen a couple razors two tone, silver and gold, and there are some silver plate options that give good results. (There's also Nickel plate setups that are less than option #2, but would leave supplies for future endeavors, if I use Nickel, as opposed to silver).

I'm thinking or leaning towards buying some of the Silver Plate stuff, which is basically activated by rubbing it onto the base metal. (Copper and Brass are the two it works best with). So what do you think, help me decide what to do.

I would send it to Chris Evatt at Razorplate to be refinished in bright nickel. I prepped my top cap myself with gradually finer grits of abrasive cloth-backed sheets by "Micro-Mesh". They can be found with a Google search but are also sold by Revell model supplies for polishing model car paint. If you send the razor to Chris you must inform him that you have used a polish on the metal. Some metal polishes contain petroleum distillates and the residues will contaminate the plating solutions and can cause poor adhesion of the plating. He will decontaminate the razor before he plates it. Here's what my NEW Long Comb looked like after he did it in bright nickel.

See my post above. There's also the option of having it coated by Delta Echo in almost any color you like.

If you do just the cap in gold it won't match the old gold. I would either do the whole razor in nickle or leave it as is.

At a minimum I would wait for a month or two until your enthusiasm over this razor has died down and you have used it a while. You might find that you like it just the way it is. Then you can use the money you were going to spend on a replate to acquire another razor.

I have tried stripping and polishing some of these NEW model Gillettes, and they've looked pretty good, but I've never had luck with giving them the mirror shine that I've seen on some.

Am I missing a step to get that mirror shine?

Regarding the original question, you can't go wrong either way. I've had a couple of these NEWs replated and they're gorgeous!

I have had several razors replated in gold and rhodium and rose gold.
Before I sent them off for a face lift I shaved with them for awhile and made sure that I intended to keep and use them
as you said in your post ,you did not pay much for it to begin with.
It would be a shame to spend time and money on a razor that you think you like . There are so many NEWs to try
and so many to buy.
I would strip it and polish it until It was a special razor to Me and I just loved the way it shaved

Laird, thanks for the info on Delta Echo; I really like what they're doing. Pretty sure I'm going to be sending them something soon.
