gillette aristocrat adjustable razor..how to use properly and identifying year

Hi gang, i managed to clean up my gillette adjustable aristocrat razor...so i wanted to know how i can find out what year it's from? from pics i figured early mid 60's...the id code is (I 4)...
Also, from reading a bit i think i've been using it incorrectly...
first off...is there a notch or reference as to what number it's currently set at? or do i figure it by eye?
also what i usually do is put in the blade close doors, and tighten it all the way in....i think that i have to find the number to set at (3-4 many suggested) and then just close it a tad more? is this right? maybe that explain why i bleed like mad when i shave...
thanks

Hello Fabs, welcome to B&B. A Gillette dated I-4 is from the fourth quarter of 1963 I think. As far as the setting, it is done by the numbers on the neck of the razor, 1 being the mildest & 9 the most aggressive.

Set the number on the dial to maybe 3 or 4, and close the doors all the way - you should feel some resistance then turn another 1/4 turn to lock it down. If at that setting it is too rough, open it back up some & dial down to 2. If you aren't getting enough hair you can dial up to 5 or 6. Good luck, that is a nice razor

FIGJIT...thanks a lot for the info and links...very helpful!!! so i know that my razor is from 1963 in the 4th quarter...cool!!!!!
