Help identify this safety razor

Hey folks,

My mom passed down this razor from her father. I gave it a shave with a random blade and came out pretty smooth with minimal redness.

That's pretty cool for me since sometimes I nick myself even with a few years of practice.

Anyways I was trying to figure out what it was to learn more, but couldn't get much since it doesn't seem to have a serial number or look exactly like any other I've seen, though seems to have a Gillette logo.

Here are the photos:
Any idea what it is?
Also while here is there a recommended way to clean it up without damaging it?

Much thanks.

Hi and welcome to B&B. I'm useless when it comes to identifying vintage razors so I'm no help to you. But if you give your razor a scrub with a toothbrush and some warm water (not hot) with some liquid dish washer you should see a difference.

The handle doesn't seem to be Gillette. However hard I try I cannot see "Gillette" in the diamond on the bottom plate. Looks to me like a Gillette Old Type imitation, which were numerous back in the days.

It's not uncommon for owners to have replaced the handles on older Gillettes for various reasons. My guess is that's what happened, but there are people here who know much much much more about older Gillettes than me.

Possibly a Gillette/Probak parts bin razor in late 1930?

Nice razor. Be careful of those bent corners. That could leave a little blade exposed. With care, it should not affect the shave. And don’t try to unbend them yourself. They can break off easily. Ask me how I know. 😃 Send it out for a restore to a place like Back Roads Gold if that interests you. But having an heirloom razor is a great thing. Enjoy it!
