G5 Scuttle

I just got my G5 in recently, and I'm pretty pleased.

It seems smaller and lighter than my last Georgetown scuttle, and it keeps the lather warm better than my last one. However, it's not as warm as my Dirty Bird brush scuttle. What do the rest of you guys think of your G5?

It's not quite where I was hoping it would be, but it's better than my last one...

I have only had my G5 for a week or so but I find it to be very enjoyable to use. Please note that I have never owned any other scuttle before to compare so my experience is limited to say the least. It has a solid feel in my hand and the lip is useful for keeping the lather inside the bowl. It also keeps the lather fairly warm with hot tap water for 3 passes. Without it my shaves were not as good. YMMV.

I like mine, but I think I prefer my large Moss. I have a 1.5x Dirty Bird on order so I'll be interested to compare all three.

I'll be really interested in your comparison too. I'm thinking the Moss is probably the best from all the accounts I've read.

Just got my G5 today. Nice surprise as early last week they didn't know how many orders they'd be able to fill before Christmas. Having never owned a scuttle before I have nothing to compare it to but I'm going to like using this a lot better than the coffee mug I had been using. I tested the G5 out with some hot water (in my cold bathroom) and it seems to keep the bowl warm enough. Looking forward to tomorrow's shave. I've been using Proraso lately since my soap lather is pathetic (more like meringue than lather). Been trying to follow the lather guides but without much success. Maybe it's just my hard well water. Think I'll give soap another shot in the G5 tomorrow and see what happens.

I posted a thread on the G5 about a week ago and I compared the Moss to it. The big take away was that the Moss kept the water about 20 degrees hotter than the G5 over a 12 minute period. The G5 might be a bit easier to build a lather in due to the ridge pattern and shape of the bowl. However, I primarily got a scuttle for warm lather and in my opinion, (and the test proved it out) the Moss by far keeps lather warmer.

I saw that, and it was too good for me to foul up with this thread... I didn't want to get scientific (you know providing meaningful information to people :001_rolle) so I started my own thread. I'm thinking I may have to pony up and buy a moss

The G5 is definitely more, pretty, for lack of a better word. But I was really more interested in the warm lather. The Moss is a little more rustic. You can definitely tell it is a hand made piece. Mine looks a little like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it kind of leans away from the spout. On top of it performing it's job better, I kind of like it for that unique look.

I am interested in how the Dirty Bird works out for me. The G5 holds 6oz of water and the Moss holds 12oz. I have to believe the larger volume of hot water has to be a factor in holding the temps longer. (Not to be too scientific :001_tt2:.) I believe the 1.5x DB holds 20 oz.

I wanted a scuttle that would keep lather hot, have a good size inner bowl, and not overwhelm the counter - DB met these criteria - and the larger difference between inside & outside diameters as compared to say Moss does suggest greater water capacity and therefore warmer lather .

I was kinda hoping for a bit more from mine also. Its the first scuttle I've owned and it is better than leaving the bush resting on its handle which is what I was doing. It does look great in my bathroom though.

I've got small hands so I wouldn't want one any bigger or heavier than the G5. The only possible improvement might be a slightly larger diameter of the inside bowl, but I need a few more shaves with it to be sure. As for looks, my wife who is usually uninterested in my shave gear was quite impressed with the looks. So impressed, she called my daughter in to see it and told her she needs to get her fiance one for his birthday.

The Moss is bigger, but it actually weighs less than the G5. The G5 is definitely a nice scuttle though.

My wife told me she ordered me a G5 for Christmas but I didn't get in time. Might be due to the fact that I got hit by the blizzard in Oklahoma hopefully it'll be here tomorrow. If not looks like I'll be waiting 'til after the new year. This will be my first scuttle so even though it might not perform as well as others I'm sure it'll be a vast improvement to me.

My Secret Santa (from the shave den) graciously sent me a Georgetown Scuttle:

It's the first scuttle I have used (previously I was using two stacked bowls), and it just showed up yesterday, so I have no opinion on it yet. But it sure does look awesome!!

My wife got me a G5 for Christmas. I t is the first scuttle I have owned. Used it this morning for my shave and was very pleased with the results. It keep everything warm through 4 passes.

I just got mine in a few days ago and I have to agree with people here: it's absolutely beautiful, but I expected a bit more warmth I think.

Granted, this is the first scuttle I've owned so I can't compare it to much, but it does seem to lose heat faster than I had hoped. I'm only using hot tap water though and not heating on a stove, so I suppose I could try that sometime down the road.

Oh well, it's a LOT better than not using a scuttle, so I can't complain. :)

And it looks great in the bathroom!
