Fissure in Ozuku JNAT.Okay?

What's up guys,

Gamma's thread about the crack in his Chosera 1k got me thinking about the crack/fissure in my Ozuku Asagi JNAT. Now I know that a lot of natural stones (esp. JNATS) come with these sorts of things, and I also know that some are "toxic" and some are "non-toxic". I am trying to figure out which this is. I lapped the heck out of my stone in an attempt to minimize it, but I think I made it worse TBH :blushing:. I can sometimes feel it when honing, sometimes not. Is anyone able to discern which type of "disruption" this is (toxic or not)? It doesn't seem to hurt the steel when honing, but I'd like to know whether to try and avoid it.

Here are a few close-up pics. I tried to take a pic with the stone wet, but it actually didn't show up as well...

It's hard to tell from the photos alone, get a safety pin and see if the stuff in the fissure is loose. Loose particles can=clicks and potential chips.

Just did what you said, and I was unfortunately able to jostle loose some particles. :bored: It doesn't seem like the fissure is that deep; maybe I should try & lap the stone some more?

Don't lap anymore, see if you can get most of stuff out with the pin, no stuff. no problem. A small, thin nail may be better, clean it out then do a light lapping to make sure the surface is clean. Run a test razor through a progression to check everything is cool.

Ahh gotcha!! So it's not so much the presence of the fissure in this case, but the "stuff" in it that could cause the problem. I will do what you said & report back for sure! Thx, Bayamontate..

I also have heard other people here (Scott life2short comes to mind) talk about sealing fissures with CA Glue...Might this be a reasonable endeavour or should I not worry about that??

IMO, sealing it with CA just keeps the stuff in there for release at any given point in the future. I've done the digging out expedition with success in the past, it should be cool.

Cool, I'll give it a try... thx again!! :thumbup1:

It works fine with linear fissures like the ones you have. Circular sandpits, in the other hand can be a PITA and almost impossible to deal with.

Looks like a soft non-toxic inclusion - You probably would have noticed issues at the edge or on the bevel if it was toxic.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured (and hoped!!). I have sort of tried to avoid it up til now just to be cautious, but it sounds like it should'nt be an issue. Which is a relief as I just got the stone & would've been bummed if it was toxic!!

Thanks again!

If you do not feel scratchy particles in the slurry when using the stone then you do not have toxic line in the stone.

How long have you had the stone? If you purchased it from a vendor and not a deal with an individual, was it advertised with this fault in the stone? It's unfortunate because you can't 'avoid' it when honing as it seems to dissect the entire hone :(

Hey man, nice to see you "over here"!!

I actually have honed a few razors on the stone and the fissure doesn't seem to affect the edge negatively. I bought the stone second-hand and did see the fissure in the pics, but I figured it was a "non-toxic" inclusion....So far so good, so I'll keep my fingers crossed!!
