Fatip Italian Razor First Impressions

Fatip Grande open comb razor in chrome.

After seeing that this razor is being sold here in the USA. I decided to purchase it. It was really an impulse buy.

First thing I notice is the finish. I think that when they made this razor they must have missed a step. The one where they polish it to remove the burrs or any type of manufacturing dings, before it’s sent to be chromed. I’ve never seen a finish this flawed before. I removed the head to inspect it and I noticed that some of the chrome flaked off the bottom of the cap, near where the threads meet it.

Also when I polished it with a microfiber cloth to take it’s picture the, cloth got caught on the little burrs at the base of the razor. I’ve had many razors from Weishi, Parker, Edwin Jagger, Merkur, Weber, and Ikon. None of them had this type of flawed finish. You may be able to overlook a little ding here and there, but something like this just looks like they don’t care about how the finished product looks.
I will shave with it tomorrow. Maybe it will be an amazing shave. But for now the finish leaves much to be desired.

Hi Altair: I have a FaTip also and it is my favorite OC razor. I don't use the regular handles. I pair mine with my Weber Bulldog, BRW Bull Mastiff Deluxe, and UFO. Since you have the Weber DLC... I would suggest you pair it up with the Weber Bulldog handle. Keep us posted on your results.

Thanks for the advice.

I got this razor a while ago in a group buy, i to was dissapointed with the finish :eek:/ dings and pitting on the head, flaking and brassing on both top and bottom plates :eek:/ handle looked like it was gripped with plyers :eek:/ What a freaken mess, But it sure us a sexy manly looking razor.

So i decided to shave with it. Well i found it a little to aggresive almost like the R41 2011 head. But not as agressive, I gave up because i was very displeased with the Fatip's Finish. So i sold it :eek:/

One day im taking a scroll via the web to BST and there it was a new Fatip in the box selling for about $40.00 Shipped. I.go for it because it looked minty with no flaws, Low and behold the Fatip arrives and same as pics this Bad Boy is Minty with no flaws, Seems its a hit or miss on sime Fatip Finishes, in the group by i was probably the only one with such a bad finished Fatip, others had flaws but very minor. So again Fatip's finishea are a hit or miss, So if you want one chances are yours will be acceptable )

I still havenr tried the Fatip yet but im getting the itch, i just need to make sure i go 3 days without shaving to my skin isnt irritated from previous shave, since i did find the Fatip aggresive i just want to play it safe )

I got the gold finish Fatip razor and found the finish to be OK, not great, but acceptable. It's a hopelessly mild shaver, so much so I bought some Feathers so I could get a decent shave, normally Feathers are way too aggressive for me.

The blade slips about when tightening the razor up, so I have to be careful to line everything up correctly.

Overall it's a good $15.00 razor, pity it cost me $40.00 delivered. :thumbdown

I too was in that group buy. My FaTip was really bad too. I sold it and got a similar head design Joris and i havent looked back.

I bought a Fatip recently as well. I wasn't very happy with the finish, either, but it seems like I actually got one of the good ones--major flaw being a spot of brassing on one of the alignment posts, along with the general rough finish all of them seem to have.

Not sure it's a keeper yet, generally the shaves have been rougher than my other razors, and it's a real pain getting that blade aligned, but I'll keep at it for a while. Threw in a Personna Lab for the next shave, hopefully that will help get a smoother shave.

Hope you enjoy yours.

Hopelessly mild? Really?

Did you put a blade in it?

My Fatip Grande had small burrs on the handle as well. I think it might have been debris in the plating process, because after a few days of shaving they were gone. It's no show pony, but I'm very happy with it.

I just ordered a Fatip Grande chrome the other day; awaiting delivery. I guess I'll open the box with great anticipation to see whether I got a 'sloppy Friday' factory special or not!

I bought my Fatip from a BAndB member last week, and have used it once.

I prefer aggressive razors, the 39c slant with a feather has always been my go to guy.

The Fatip I got looks great, no burs, flaking, flaking or dents. Heavy in the hand for a small razor.

Loaded with a feather, lathered with cream -

Now I never bleed (not in the last ~5 years) - Fatip cut me 5-7 times. It sliced of any bumps and embellishes on my face.

It is the most aggressive razor I have ever used and for $35 - its a steal, its a bargain... it has a big set of balls.

So how would I use it in my line up?
Fatip really excels with ATG with its stock handle.

39C Slant for my fast pass to remove any long thick hairs.
Fatip with stock handle ATG for BBS on 2nd and 3rd pass - its weighted so well that on the 2nd pass only apply a little pressure, on the 3rd shave - just let it pass over and clean you up.

I think I <3 my Fatip.

I find a razor this aggressive more useful when i don't shave for 3-5 days, Face has some good rest and lots of beard, There for its aggressiveness does well and not an everyday shaver, at least i don't think so.

I hate my FaTip so much I bought two and will also be buying the gun metal finish as well. As far as imperfections go, this is a razor, and a work horse at that. If you want a display piece buy a Joris. With that said my gold FaTip does look like it has a better finish.

As far as "hopelessly mild"... Now thats funny!

Like any aggressive razor, blade selection is very important with this razor. This is my daily razor and I found that in order for me to use every day I need blades that seem to be on the milder side of the spectrum. Derby, Sharks, and IP Reds are great for me with the FaTip. I get great shaves with sharper blades but by day 3 my face starts to feel it.

This is a very good example of "Don't judge a book by it's cover" Although I'm still not happy with the finish, I must give it very high praise for its ability to shave. The FaTip excels at being efficient at mowing down whiskers. I paired it up with a Nacet Stailess blade and it was a wonderful combination. All it really took was 2 passes plus touch up and I was smooth as a baby's bottom, I applied alum, followed by some vigoroso, and proraso pre/post shave balm and I was flying high. I highly recommend this razor for anyone looking for an aggressive, yet effective shaver. It really is very good.

Thanks guys for commenting on my post. It seems like this razor is a winner in the shave department, even though it lacks in luster. We can pretty much agree that it's very good at what it's meant to do.

Hi Altair: Did you pair the FaTip with your Weber Bulldog? or Did you use the stock handle? If you pair it up with a Weber handle that Fatip will perform like a machine.

Warhawk,

Sadly I sold my weber to a friend that fell in love with it. Most likely I will pick up another one. For now, I'm just using the original handle. Thanks
