When you think of a barbershop scent, what to you is the perfect example? I think for me it would be Pinaud Clubman.

Gillette canned foam. The Barbershop fresh variety. I lived in a small town and the barbershop smelled very close to that.

Colonel Conk Bay Rum. I know...it sounds crazy...but it's way more barbershop than Bay Rum. And it's really good too!

Pinaud Clubman for sure. I also see that Proraso products seem to be common staples whenever I see clips in Italy, but in my personal experience Pinaud Clubman is it. You see and smell it everywhere

Speaking for myself, Pinaud Clubman is the best example of a vintage barbershop scent.

Back when I used to get haircuts, my barber would finish with a straight razor on my sideburns and back of my neck. For this he would use a hot foam dispenser using Barbasol. then would sprinkle on Clubman powder on the back of the neck. So Clubman for sure, but when Fine American Blend came out, it instantly also reminded me of the hot Barbasol foam.

Clubman. Although occasionally after the neck shave after a haircut (remember those?) sometimes my barber would use The Veg. And always clubman talk. Aqua Velma was a barber staple, too.

I can remember getting a splash on the back of the neck with Master Bay Rum, followed up with a good dusting brush filled with Talc.

When I want that "American barbershop" feeling at home I find it is easy to recreate. I shave with Williams or with Gillette Foamy Barbershop foam (which really smells like the Campbell's hot lather from the machine) and then follow it up with a big splash of cheap bay rum (Stephan's, Gabels, or Masters), and then a dusting of Pinaud Clubman talc. Then I give myself a lollypop.

Growing up in Toronto, I think it really depended on which barbershop you went to. Both Clubman and Proraso seem equally 'right' to me as an adult.

For me in Italy it's both Floid and Proraso. Now, they are also made by the same company!

Clubman in my opinion, because that's the scent I remember growing up getting the ears lowered. I still wear it when I get a haircut.

That’s what barbers used in my home town (splash + talc mixed with the scent of gents smoking tobacco)!
