Down the rabit hole I go

cleanshaved

I’m stumped
My entery to the world of JNAT's is a Wakasa Lv 4,5 with a Tomo nagura from JNS.
a few e-mails with Maksim and this is what he says "
"Ok i just tested Wakasa again and can say to you without any hesitation that this hone is superb finisher and very pleasant to use !!!"
Question time is over so down the hole I go.
you guys are great the light has been left on down the other end, I will go towards it......

Welcome :lol: It isn't a bottomless pit ya know, once you settle on a system that works for you the edges are sublime.

Rabbit hole indeed.

I'm also adding to the collection, just ordered a 50x175 combo BBW/Coti and 1.8x1.8 slurry stone last night.

That will bring my "sharpening" collection to (not including the Lansky system):

Stones/plates:
2-sided barber's hone
DMT325
DMT1200
Norton 4k/8k
Naniwa 12k
C12k
50x175 Coti combo

Strops:
Illinois 127 (fabric component treated with CrOX)
Mountain Mike's big 3" mahogany (never really cared for the knitted nylon 2nd component)
Kanayama 2196 Linen/leather
Kanayama #3 Suede/leather

And yes... I snagged Tony's last "Old No 2"

So now I need to figure out what progression is going to work best with the cluster of flat rocks I've got.
Odd... I can put a sweet HHT4/5 on my Wacker with ease, but the Revisor won't even give me an HHT1 even spending much more time on it.
SWMBO's hair is baby fine and not the best for HHT, but still....

Wasn't going to bother on this production run since I've spent too much this month already between the Coti and the two Kanayamas, but when I saw he was pairing these #2's with his linen and not the standard cotton 2nd component, I figured why not.
I too am growing fond of the barber's end and am thinking about cutting the handles off of my Illinois.

The Mountain Mike's has been relegated to travel status since it is flexible enough to pack without creasing the leather, the "fabric" component seems to be okay, and until I got the Kanayamas, it was the one that wasn't treated with CrOX (thus risking staining clothing, hotel towels, etc....).
I loved it when it was new... probably because I paid twice what I paid for the 127, but after working with both for a while, it just seems too big and "klunky".

I have been thinking of adding a coti to my set as well. The lapping of the norton and Naniwa is becoming a bore.
my mouse finger is ready but I should wait a few months so I can play with the JNAT and understand it without another new stone to add to the confusion.
must stay strong, must stay...........strong............watch this space.

So am I correct in thinking that the Coti using the "Dilucot" is all I need once I set the bevel on the 1200, or would it be faster/easier to go ahead and run the Norton 4/8 and replace the 12k stones with the Coti?

for me once bevel is set i hit my la vainette with dilucot in literaly 10 to 15 minutes every time ..the razor is always shave ready first time round . Me personaly i find it much quiker and consistant than using the norton 4k/8k and more enjoyable honing experiance..

i'm sure if i'd used norton constantly for the last 6 years i'd be able to do the same with 4k/8k.

so for me it would be 1k c for seriuos bevel work and then coticule and strop. after that you can if you wish add finishing paste thats your choice... I'll be trying j natnext week after coticule .. I have tryed 5x1 thury and felt absalutley no differance after a coticule finish.. i would acatuly say the differance was identical so both stones are equal i'm hoping to see some differance with j nat.

my should take about a week to get to me. will update with results after a few hones.
It would be nice to hear how you get on with the JNAT after a Coti. As my next move may be to replace my middle stone with a Coti.

So am I correct in thinking that the Coti using the "Dilucot" is all I need once I set the bevel on the 1200,

~~~depending on the vein, most coticules are not merely *capable* bevel correctors, they do that chore quite handily so therefore, no need to use a DMT 1200 to set the bevel, unless you have one hell of a chip
or would it be faster/easier to go ahead and run the Norton 4/8 and replace the 12k stones with the Coti?
~~~I think you'd be better off learning the coticule and forgetting about the Norton 4/8 and the other 12 k stones you own, for awhile. Too many coti n00bs make the mistake (not saying you would follow in their steps) of not taking the necessary (prerequistie) time to really learn how to hone using the coticule only, and only one vein at that. I've read of more than one honer that came to the coticule game late, learning on Nortons, proclaim how difficult it is to learn how to hone using the venerable coticule. At the risk of repeating myself, please, do not follow in their shoes. IOW, give yourself p-lenty of time to learn dilucot. Don't rush it and go on to another honing system later to come back and diss coticules (not saying you would do so). forewarned is forearmed

read all of these articles, w/the exception of the last one on j-nats (really has little to do with cotiules), with special emphasis on these-

http://www.coticule.be/strokes.html

http://www.coticule.be/edge-probing-and-assessment.html

http://www.coticule.be/hanging-hair-test.html

http://www.coticule.be/dilucot-honing-method.html 'the grand daddy'

http://www.coticule.be/progressive-honing-method.html -opened the coti door for me...use BBW in the middle, after you get your edge (bevels) corrected, goto the BBW, then finish using coticule on plain water...you did say you have a combo stone, so use that BBW side via progressive honing ala Bart

http://www.coticule.be/advanced-feedback-markers.html read the first sentence in the 'Commitment' paragrph 10 times

http://www.coticule.be/edge-maintenance.html last but not least....well, I guess we wont be hearing from you for awhile
=:) seriously, read all of these chapters not just once, but until you are able to memorize each one. I'm not kidding! You bought a coticule to do what with it? Did I hear you say you want to learn how to use it to it's fullest? Bart has poured blood sweat and tears into writing those articles. They are the very foundation of modern straight razor honing using the Belgian coticule. No one else has ever written coticule information (for straight razor honing) as comprehensive as this

Wow... a true do-it-all stone.
Very nice.

Good thing I'm off work tomorrow. I've looked over some of the articles, and some of what I'm reading seems to say that the edge may not be what I am expecting (Feather sharp?)... yet I've never heard of anyone unhappy with their edge.
