Did I get ripped off? Or was it a great deal? (pics)

I picked this up at a local antique shop... paid $6 It has a Gillette logo on the bottom, but that is all I know about it.

Did I get a deal?

Looks like a 40's super speed. Do not think you got ripped off. Should clean up nicely. I am in Dallas as well, welcome to the forums.

It appears to be a Gillette Super Speed from 1948-1954, with a missing end cap. If you can clean it adequately, it should work well.

A little cleaning up, and you should have a fine shaver. It looks like it might have a bit of brassing, though. That doesn't affect how well it shaves.

Congrats on a nice first buy and welcome to B&B.

See the link in my sig block below for info on safely cleaning razors.

As to your other thread, I'd suggest buying it. A lot depends on price, though.

For six bucks, I'd say you did fine. Got a bit of work to clean it up, but the '40's style Super Speeds are purported to be some great shavers (starting to try mine tomorrow).

If you check the underside of the head, you can see if there is a date code. These had no date codes from '47 to the first half of 1950 ('47 had an un-notched center bar, yours is notched so it's '48 or later). In the second half of 1950, they did a date code on the Gillette diamond, that was a V for '50. In 51, they used a W on the far left, with a number on the far right to denote the quarter of the year. This continued with X, Y and Z through 1954, the last year for this series, as well as the first year for the flare tip (or '50's style Super Speed).

........ In the second half of 1950, they did a date code on the Gillette diamond, that was a V for '50. ......

In 1950 Gillette ran a relatively small prototype run with the date code V3. It was stamped on either side of where the handle connects to the blade guard base rather then at the ends of the base as in later dates. Is this what you mean? I don't know of any date codes within the Gillette diamond.

I don't know about all of the V3 stamped ones. But the one on my Aristocrat is on the diamond shape in the guard (not in the Gillette diamond logo):

Yes, Brent. Mine is in the same place as your photo.

I mis spoke (not my day it seems). I meant on the raised diamond, not in the Gillette diamond. BTW, did they run a V4 also, or just the V3?

That's a nice little shaver you got for the price of one 5 blade cartridge. The razor will last a life time but the cartridge will last 1 - 2 weeks max. I'd say you got a deal!

Use the Fat, Luke!
I have amassed six DE razors horrifyingly quickly - RAD - and my favorite, even over the red tip, is my undated SS. It shaves exactly the same as a red tip, for me, has a tad less bite, and feels better in my hands. I paid $20 for mine and consider it a steal

This was the first type of DE I ever used when I started to properly wet shave. After trying out dozens of different types of razors I have pretty much come back to this one as my favorite. They are great.
