What's new

No RAD for six years

I didn't realize it until a few days ago when I logged into one of my old accounts, but I have not bought a single new DE razor in six years. Time flies. I say "new" because I did pick up a new to me Gillette Slim that I found in an antique shop a while back because it was in much better shape than the one I had.

In fact, almost my sole investment in this hobby over that time has been in soaps, mostly of the artisan and/or European variety. So this raises the question -- what about the rest of you? Has it been longer for any of you? What is the most significant development I've missed, whether in the budget or high-end category or in between?

I also had a long pause from RAD.

The only significant development I saw, when I became active a year or two ago, was that fully-machined razors, in stainless steel/brass/aluminum were becoming more popular, and there were some relatively-affordable alternatives.

I bought a Razorock Lupo Aluminum, and a Pearl Flexi, in fairly quick succession. I'm happy, for a while.<g>

I had to think about it for a while. I have purchased two in the last 10 years. One was a Ranger tech that I found in an antique store, the other was a President that I bought off the Bay. It was listed as chrome razor or I wouldn’t have bought it. If I were going to purchase a modern razor it would probably be a Lambda Athena. As of now I am content with the razors I have.

I'm waiting for a couple of razors to arrive and I'm also thinking that it's time for me to stop buying more shaving gear, or at least more expensive that is. Currently, there's only one razor that I truly desire to own, but sadly it's currently not in production and hopefully it will be at some point in the future.

If you got Razors that do a great shave, why buy more?

Dave you money for something else you want.

I picked up the titanium diamondback at its initial introductory price. Ordered it last November. Before that was a Chiseled Face Legacy, which I ordered maybe 7 months before that. None since.

I've been shaving daily at home with a Wolfman WR1 for about 9 years now. I did recently give in to my curiosity and buy a SE razor - Alpha Spirit. I must say I'm impressed.

First, congratulations!

But me... I already saved my money with 50 years of cheapskate DE shaving. @flask28 has seen my cars, so he knows how little I desire automotive excess... or even normal automotive cosmetic money, time, and effort...

So, a DE or 30 gallons of gas? And all that time behind the wheel to burn the gas up? I know which one sparks joy. Plus I like giving razors away, spark somebody else's joy. Many vintage finds are more like 2 to 10 gallons of gas.

Let's not talk about SRs.

Well said. My point was not to praise or condemn anyone for what they have or haven't bought. I was genuinely surprised I hadn't bought a new razor in so many years. And as I now seldom hunt through antique shops and tables at fairs, I doubt I'll come across many vintage ones either. I'm now really only a soap collector. I think the biggest single advance of the DE razor in recent times has been the three-piece design with multiple available base plates. That way you get a customized fit without much trouble or expense. But that is now old news.

I ordered two nice new straights yesterday.

I slowed down a lot when I got a Blackbird Ti, because I am no longer searching for something better. But I definitely am not cured, and when I get bored, I won't stop, I will move on to something else. I have and stick to a budget, and have for a long time.

I bought a bunch of headphones in a previous phase of acquisition, and a pair of Focal Utopia open backed phones did actually cure me. I just lost interest in trying to find something better. And I actually lost interest in trying anything different as well.

I'm careful getting into John's car.

Now that I think about it, I've careful in his boat too! But for different reasons.

I'll share that my Lambda Athena/ARES purchase put a big kibosh on my RAD but it's only been a year. We'll see how long that inoculation keeps for. I notice I keep misspelling Lambda as Lambada. The Forbidden Razor!

Have you ever considered that this might be a sign of moral decay?
I am not sure if I understand.

I think we have a lot of moral obligations in our consumption of financial and natural resources. This is one of the least impactul hobbies I have had in terms of putting me at odds with those obligations. I have a budget for hobbies in general which this hobby barely dents, and we are just using small and tiny pieces of common metals, soaps, and similar things. I am sure it it far less that 1% of my household waste.

Me being facetious sometimes doesn't translate well in social media.
