What's new

Any thoughts?

Hi B&B community, I wonder if you can help?

I’m in the UK and yesterday went into an antique store and picked up this Gillette safety razor for £5. Couldn’t resist it as thought any part of it was worth that amount of cash, cheaper than a beer in my local pub.

Anyway, just trying to get a feel for how old this razor is and what’s the best thing to do with it ie clean it or leave the patina.

The inside is beat up but the razor blade box, razor and storage case in good Nik👍

I think it could be quite old and may start using it for what it was made for to give my mornings a bit of nostalgia.

Anyway, please see pics and any comments will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Jon

Incredible!

A cased Canadian Single Ring caught in the wild in the UK for a fiver?!

Fantastic catch! It looks to be a Standard Set with a blade bank missing. Something like this US set.

It's probably post 1919. The Standard Sets were made for a long period I believe.

It looks to be in great shape. I would soak it in hot water and washing up liquid a few times, and get any residual gunk off the body and teeth with a gentle scrub from an old tooth brush.

It should be shave ready.

Congrats! It gives me hope.

Hi EdgeLord someone’s pointed me in your direction. I don’t suppose you have a spare Canadian blade bank knocking about? I picked this up for £5 last weekend and have just joined B&B.

To draw a member's attention you need to add an @ prefix to their username. This then shows up in their "Alerts" list (and if you hover over it, it shows the member's details and avatar [check this: @Jon Andrews]).

TMK, NONE of Gillette's blade banks state where they were made.

Wow! Nice one.

A good long soak in hot (NOT BOILING) water with Fairy Liquid followed by a toothbrush (+ Fairy Liquid) scrub should brighten up your razor and make it shave-ready.

I found another blade bank on eBay UK. It's the original (older) type, so it's slightly different to yours. As it's on auction (and not a "Buy it now") I am not permitted to link it (on B&B)... but here's what I typed in the search box:
