DE shaving and writing with a fountain pen

When I arrived here, I was heartened to see a fountain pen section on B&B. I've been using fountain pens on and off for about 30 years, and I've been shaving with a DE razor and soap for over 40 (since there was anything to shave...), so I'm not a "Johnny-come-lately" to either. I find it interesting that the key to success in using either a fountain pen or a double edge razor is to apply no pressure and let the implement do the work. I also find it interesting that technological "advances" like cheap ballpoints and 5-blade cartridge razors teach modern-day consumers the opposite lesson - more pressure is better performance. Come to think of it, isn't that the mantra of modern society?

Yep, I think you broke the code.

Welcome to the Nib. And be sure to share your pen collection with us...we also like pictures!

I'd offer a slightly different suggestion, one I've mentioned here before. I think that with ballpoints and cartridge razors, nobody really teaches people the best way to use them. They figure it out on their own, pressing hard because they see other people doing it, and it seems like common sense. Classic safety razors and fountain pens teach us the lesson that there's a right way and many wrong ways to use these tools.

Learning about a light touch was particularly important when I learned to use an SE razor. When you learn the skills involved in using classic safety razors, and then go back to a decent cartridge temporarily, you discover that it doesn't require much pressure either. Learn to use a fountain pen, and then go back to one of the better quality ballpoints, and you discover that a ballpoint can be used with a light touch as well.

I still prefer SE razors (or injectors) and fountain pens. Cartridge razors and ballpoints are not necessarily bad tools however, you just have to know how to use them.

Welcome to the Nib, and to B&B generally!

Welcome to the Nib. Along with physical pressure, we tend to have too much mental pressure in our lives. So, if you are so inclined, kick back, pack a bowl or cut a cigar, and join us in the Brown Leaf when you get a chance. Life looks better after a nice relaxing smoke.
