Hmm... that gets me thinking. Know what else is an enzymatic soap, is readily available, and may already be in your house? Shout laundry pre-treat spray.

A couple of years ago I started using Shout to clean my dirt bike (I know very different, but bear with me). The procedure is the hose off the chunks of mud, coat it all with Shout, let it soak for 20 minutes, hose it off. The result is a showroom clean dirt bike with no scrubbing. Now I wonder if Shout would have the same effect on razor gunk. I may have to let one of my razors get gunky and test this out...

I will keep you posted on this... It may be a while though... I only shave 3-4 times a week and I am in the habit of wiping off my NEW every time I'm done shaving, and my current soap (VDH) seems to produce little gunk. I think I will switch up to a gillette SS (more places for gunk to hide) and Proraso (I've noticed the proraso leaves a good bit of scum on my sink and razor).

In the meantime as a small scale test, if I have time this weekend I'll spray the bottom plate of my NEW with Shout. There is some buildup hiding between the teeth of it.

Hmmm, I have a razor that I was planning to take a toothbrush to, I'll give the Shout a try and see how it does as a pre-treat.

I gave a Slim with a light case of soap scum the Shout treatment. Sprayed it on, let it sit for 10 minutes and a couple of swipes with a toothbrush & some hot water and it was all bright and shiny. Can't say that I care for the smell, though, too detergenty (is that a word?).

A lot of dishwasher detergents contain enzymes too. I think I'll try a hot water & detergent soak next time I have a razor gunk up.

I wouldn't try this with any razor you like... use a clunker or something. Most dishwashing detergents contain phosphates and alkaline salts. Pretty nasty stuff for some finishes.

Yesterday I received a vintage Gillette razor from Ebay. Used boiling water with Oxy Clean, soaked until water cooled, rinsed well then a second soak in water and Oxy Clean. When cooled took a toothbrush to it. Seemed to get the gunk out; looked almost new.

Automatic dishwasher detergent is way too caustic for safe use on razors. Oxy Clean has been known to damage resin coatings on Super Adjustables and black-handle Super Speeds.

Laundry pre-treaters, like Shout or Resolve, use surfactants and enzymes. Surfactants are just detergents, and enzymes break down organic materials from plants and animals, and have little or no effect on mineral deposits, but could be of benefit in removing soap scum. Nothing there that would harm a razor . . . might be worth a try when SWMBO isn't looking. (She gets cranky whenever I go near the laundry room . . .)
