Baldes Without Teflon Coating

Are there any worth shaving with? I personally do not care, but a friend of mine's wife has shown concern about using teflon coated blades. I've always assumed that all shaving blades were teflon coated. I've read some conflicting reports on the matter as well.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

There are only a few, mostly by Treet. The only one I can think of with good shaving qualities is the Treet Blue Special, or "Black Beauty." It's a carbon steel blade with black oxide coating/treatment on the table, but the edges have been ground and honed away to bare steel. It's a throwback to the old Gillette Blue Blade. They're good for two shaves, maybe three in a stretch. These Black Beauties are out of production, and getting harder to find. Shoebox shave shop may still have some.

Some blade makers use "Super" to indicate Teflon coating. For example, Personna stainless steel blades are uncoated, and supers are coated.

But I think the blade coatings are unlikely to get into your system. Any coating that flakes off should rinse away with the lather.

I believe some of the GEM SE blades also sport a PTFE (probably not Teflon(R)) coating.*

*Teflon(R) is a trademark of the DuPont company and is used with a host of different non-stick chemicals. PTFE -- poly(tetrafluoroethylene) -- is just one of them.

Thanks for the responses. I will relay all of the great info given here.

I've mentioned that the teflon is probably nothing to worry about. So hopefully it will ease her mind on the matter. If not, they can try out the Treet blades.
