Product: Babor Men Ultra Comfort Shaving Cream
Maker: Dr. BABOR GmbH
Cost: $30.- (US) per 100mL tube
Brushless creams don't necessarily get a good appraisal from folks here. Lacking the traditional appeal of a whipped-up lather, the brushless creams are relegated to the "one pass and I'm in a hurry but I still can't afford to look like a bum" bin.
I was given a tube of Babor for Christmas and after trying a few shaves with it, I think it's actually a pretty worthy product. The full name of the product is Babor Men Ultra Comfort Shaving Cream. Babor is a German skin-care company that makes products primarily for women, but have a men's skin-care line as well.
On a warm, wet face with three days' worth of growth, I rubbed a dime-sized dollop of the thick, white cream. It needs to be worked-in for a few seconds and it becomes very slick-feeling and becomes semi-translucent. The scent is...indescribable. It's not bad, but it's quite faint and I have no idea what it is. Even if it smelled awful, you'd hardly notice. There's just enough to where you couldn't call it unscented.
I did one pass with the grain, using a Schick Injector with a fresh Schick blade. The cream comes off in a typical gross-looking smear of runny cream and stubble. My face felt pretty good and I found there was still enough slickness on my face for another pass across the grain, even though it didn't look like there was any cream left on the skin.
The shave was typical for a two-pass Injector shave with a fresh blade. More importantly, my skin felt very good. There was no redness, no irritation. The skin felt nice and toned. It almost feels like I'd already applied an aftershave balm. I would expect a skin-care company to produce a cream that makes the skin feel good, so it's not really a surprise.
So the rundown:
Pros: makes the face feel very nice, a single application is still good for a second pass
Cons: pretty pricey. A 100mL tube costs 30USD
Is it the best shave cream ever? Probably not, and it doesn't have the enjoyment that comes with brushing-on a pleasant-smelling lather, but I'll add it to my rotation, making an especially alternative on those days when I don't feel like whipping up a lather.
Ingredients: Water, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Cetyl Alcohol, Potassium Hydroxide, Fragrance, Isopropyl Myristate, Sodium Hydroxide, Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Menthol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
