A Great Shave

I usually don't shave on weekends, as I enjoy looking forward to a nice, relaxing Monday morning kickstart of the week's routine. Anyway, this Monday morning, the stomach and back discomfort I'd been experiencing since Saturday afternoon (which I thought was food poisoning) turned excruciating and I went to the ER. Turned out it wasn't food poisoning.

To make a long story (CT, MRI x2, 16 tubes of blood, various specialist consults, etc.) short, I'd suffered a kidney infarction. The finding was sufficiently obscure that, even as a polymath, I had to do a little research to confirm my understanding of the condition. The bottom line is that I'm now home and pain-free. They don't know why it happened, it only affected less than 10% of one kidney, and all my numbers are good.

Because of this little adventure (and 2.5 days spent feeling like someone's ongoing lab experiment), I came home with a 5-day crop of whiskers. I took a long, hot shower, lathered up some TOBS Almond, put a new Feather blade in my L2 Slim, and had at it. Three pass, nearly perfect BBS, and zero nicks/blood. No sting whatsoever from the alum block.

Awesome. The best shave I've had in a long time. Made me feel human again. It's great to be home, that's for sure.

Ken,

Sound like a 'win/win' situation.

Congratulations on a great shave and more importantly a good recovery!

Be well.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Stay on top of it and don't let the slightest warning sign go unheeded

Good to hear that you are back to normal and clean shaven once again :001_smile

Thanks, guys, for the kind words. I feel fine now, but I'll definitely be keeping tabs on this one.

Glad you are back in the game & glad you got a great shave. Polymath is a good word. Being one myself, I did not have to look it up, but it is a good word.

Congrats on your recovery and great homecoming shave. I had to google polymath to learn I was not one...:), but this is one of the great things about B&B, it's diverse membership leads to learning.

Had any physicians spoke to you about microangiopathies such as hemolytic uremic syndrome? I ask because this starts out from an e.coli infection due to shiga like toxin. Eating raw hamburger or undercooked meat would have done it and presented initially as food poisoning.

Not specifically, though I'll mention it next week during my hematology followup. I'm assuming (dangerous, I know) that they ruled out this branch of possibilities due to my complete absence of nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. My only symptoms were intense abdominal pain/cramping, right side flank pain, and bloating.

I'm happy to report that, as of yesterday, I'm feeling perfectly fine again. It's definitely a stark moment when the reality of one's appalling fragility finally dawns...

I'm looking forward to being uploaded at some point in the future and then downloaded into my choice of physical incarnations. Now, I only have to survive long enough for science to catch up with my plans! :001_smile
