2022 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - Shave Trek Season 2

I think I am going to refrain from this year. I might buy a stone to sharpen my wood working tools but I am unable to swear that I will never take it inside and use it on a straight razor.

I will follow along and watch the shenanagins and who knows maybe even bake a batch or two of cookies.

Yes, I can see buying a stone or two. Sending the SRs out all the time would wind up costing more in the long run. I suppose you could join up and buy that stone for the woodworking tools and then call yourself Out if you did use it on an SR. Sending them out has always been a restraint exception.

I have stones, and buy new ones, for my metal shop and I also use the same on the wife's woodworking tools. But, I don't use a SR so they don't apply to the restraint. I do have a couple old SRs around, and I don't know where they came from actually. I've never had a hankering to pay any attention to them.

But, then, cookies are good too!

I am not the authority here and usually consider myself to be a "stay in my own lane" kind of guy, but I don't see how buying a stone for your wood working tools would disqualify you. I see no difference between the situation you describe and someone using a lathe or drill press to make brush handles (unless they purchased a lathe or drill press specifically for that purpose). I have a 3D printer that I use to make the occasional razor stand or soap bowl, but I didn't purchase it for the purpose of printing shaving gear. The final decision is yours of course, but I for one would enjoy the presence of your company and look forward to your contributions to the thread.

It doesn't disqualify - for use on woodworking tools. It would disqualify - when then used to sharpen a straight razor in the same year in which is was bought while one was on restraint.

There is a whole catalog of stuff needed to maintain straight razors. It all costs quite a bit. And needs certain skills to use to boot. Hence why some folks send their razors out for maintenance. And, so the sending out of SRs is always a restraint exception. But, the buying of the stuff needed to DIY it, is part of the restraining.

I'm a bit more lax when it comes to these things. If a sharpening stone were bought during the restraint, it's good if it's mostly used on cutting tools and maybe once in a while on a SR. If it were bought expressly for use on a SR then that's an Out.

Here, though, the self-disqualifying rule applies. He says he would call himself Out if he went and used it on a SR. So, playing from home and otherwise participating is also All Good.

This will be about the 4 or 5th time I’ve entered one of these things, hopefully it’s finally the year. I need to stock up on a bottle of Myrsol formula K and a few plastic razor blades, but other than that I’m set. I just spent 3 months on the Island of Guam and used my Vector and Gillette Fatboy for every shave along with Proraso. Not sure how long a tub of regular size Proraso would last, but I’ll buy 3 of those also to be on the safe side. At 39 years old maybe I can finally start saving money on this hobby

Hello gents, I’m seriously considering attempting the GRUYERE in 2022. I’ll need to purchase a pack of SE blades, an unscented balm and an alum stick and I think I’ll be good. Quick question about the rules:
1) I didn’t see it in the rules but assume the exception has to be declared before the start of the journey, can’t leave it TBD and decide during the journey what it is?
2) In regards to purchasing gifts, I’m expecting my first child in 2022 so if it’s a boy I want to purchase a 2022 razor (not sure which one yet) to give them when they are old enough to learn to shave. As I’ll be packing it away for over a decade and won’t be using the razor myself, is that an acceptable purchase as a gift? If not, I’ll have to make that my exception.
