Added "Lost in Action"

It's hard to compare with 2018 as the numbers are calculated at different times. It appears we lost about 3% more.

April 13th Operative No. 96 StuartT (OUT - German Ralf Aust 6/8 straight razor)

April 14th Operative No. 6 Laird (Self declared -OUT)

Operative StuartT was approaching his destination, when he saw all of the cars, and flashing lights up ahead. He swung over to the curb, and parked, staring out the windscreen of his business coupe. Finally he got out and started to make his through the crowd. He stopped to speak to a police officer he knew through his bowling league, "So what's happened here?" "Looks like someone took a jump, fell, or was thrown out of an upper window. No idea who, a passing cabby saw the crumbled body in the street." Just then another officer approached, "Looks like it was one Spade's crew, a Mr. Kluber." "Kluber!" exclaimed operative StuartT. "I know, ... knew him. Let me through." The officer led operative StuartT to the form, now under a sheet. He paused and then identified the body, lying there among the broken glass. "Let's go check out this place." "No way, not you. It's a murder investigation. Let us do our jobs."

Reluctantly he made his way to his car, and left to find a coffee shop. There he called the office, telling Effie what had happened. He had finished hanging up when he saw operative Laird enter the shop, and waved him over. "Have you heard? Kluber has been killed, someone tossed him from a window about five stories up." Operative Laird looked at him in surprise, "No, I did not know. I saw you leave the area with all the official vehicles, and followed you hoping to get a chance to talk." They sat down at a table and ordered coffees, "How did you happen to be at the site?" enquired operative Laird. "I was following up on the assignment we got the other day, looking into how the Fatman knows so much about our moves. Kluber had called me from the Redtop Lounge, but when I got there he had left. So I was driving around, and happened to stumble on the scene there. Pure luck, ... bad luck as it were." Operative Laird nodded solemnly, "That's too bad. Wonder how it happened." He leaned in closer, "Any idea who he was meeting or following at the Redtop?" Operative StuartT shock his head, "Not really, just some Russian woman that's all. This is getting worrisome, really thinning out our ranks." They sipped their coffee in silence. Operative StuartT perked up a bit, "Hey, are you going to be one of the group flying out to Seattle?" "No, have not been told to. What's up with that?" "I heard they are going to investigate some of the shipping companies out there." They finished their coffee in silence, and got up to leave. As they stepped out onto the sidewalk, operative Laird paused, "So where are you off to next? New leads on Gutman?" "Yeah, that's right. I have some theories I have been working on. What about you, Gutman, or that odd Thursby character?" Laird nodded, "No joking about that Thursby nut-case. I have seen him about, gives me the creeps knowing he is out there, sometimes following us." Operative StuartT saw some glittering debris on Laird's coat. He reached out to brush them off, "Looks like you got some debris on you. Have to keep up appearances." They were small fragments of glass. Operative StuartT stared at them for a split second, then he stepped off towards his car, "Well I am off; first a shave then to follow a nightclub clue. Can I drop you somewhere?" "No, that is okay, thanks for the offer." Operative Laird watched as the business coupe drove away, then got in his car and followed.

Operative StuartT pulled up by his barber, it was still open, doing brisk business with people getting ready for a night on the town. He walked in, hanging up his coat and hat, gave his barber a wave and sat down to wait. Across the street operative Laird sat in his car, watching. Through the window he saw StuartT get up and go to a barber's chair, and the sheet being placed about him. He waited a few minutes more, then got out. He crossed the street and found a place close to StuartT's car.

As StuartT tried to relax in the chair, enjoying the soothing feeling of the hot towel wrapped around his face, there was something nagging him at the back of his mind. Something was not right, what was it? Then it came to him, the glass! Why did Laird have shards of glass stuck in his coat? No, could he be the fifth columnist? The Fatman's spy? He had to get to Laird's apartment and check it out. The barber finished his shave, and applied some Lilac Vegetal, and talc. Operative StuartT paid his bill, thanking him for the great job. He hurried out of the shop, it was dark now, the sidewalk just a series of yellow spotlights from lamppost to lamppost. Operative Stuart walked with a quick pace, as he approached his car, he reached into his pocket for his keys. Getting he turned the key and pressed the petal down to start the engine. He was about to shift into first when he noticed a shadow flicker across the rear-view mirror. He looked up into the mirror, just as he felt a strong arm reach around his neck. He saw the face of laird loom in the mirror, an evil grin on his face. Then the flash of a blade as Laird dragged a straight razor across his neck, cutting deep. Warmth flooded down the front of operative StuartT's shirt as life seeped out of him. Laird reached over and shut off the engine, then he pushed over the passenger seat and climbed out. Looking about he saw no one, in this corner of the city no one would find the body until morning. He drove away. looking for a phone booth.

Finding a phone booth, Laird called Kasper Gutman, "Another one of Spade team is gone. That makes two this night. Listen, I have important news. Spade is sending a team out to Seattle to go after the shipping contacts." He listened for a few minutes, then "Got it. Consider it done." He smiled and hung up the phone.

@Pepin...Thanks for running the sabbatical and for the entertaining narratives!
I will drop in from time to time to see how everyone is doing.
Good luck to all survivors.

Sam Spade looked over the men assembled around the meeting table. Coffee cups, paper and pencils were scattered about, it had been a long meeting and everyone was tired. "Okay, that about wraps it up. You will fly out to Seattle and look into the shipping connections we discussed. Operative Laird will be a valuable asset as he has family and friends there. He can set up some good meetings for information." In the corner, operative Laird smiled and nodded, "That's right. I have wired ahead, and we will be met and given a good reception." Sam knocked his knuckles on the table top, "Alright, let's get this operation moving. You can pick up your plane tickets from Effie on your way out. Plane leaves tonight, so be sure to get to the airport on time."

Laird had already packed for the trip. He made a last call to the Fatman, detailing the six operatives who were going on the Seattle flight. He checked his luggage, a variety weapons, poisons etc. He thought about taking out the entire team, and a big grin came across his face, eyes glowing feverishly. He made sure he was at the airport early.

Laird got to the airport around 7:30, a private plane had been hired by Brigitte O'Shaughnessy, the Lockheed Saturn 75 a high-wing, twin-engine monoplane with 14 seats. This would be a long flight. They would need to refuel several times, and after talking with the airport personnel he found out that the plane also had cargo to drop off along the way. He wandered about the aircraft, looking into the cargo area, cockpit, some of the controls, maybe he could loosen some cables or connections he thought, and say I will take a later flight?, No better go along, and help with the reception. Soon the crew arrived, and the others, MarsEnglish, Midoio, Treebeard, Jamiecm, TreadwayJohnA, and Barko78 straggled in, everyone looked at the plane in wonder as the engines warmed up, and the crew stowed their luggage. They were ushered on, and they buckled themselves in, looking out of the window they could see rain start up, it would be a wet flight. In short order they felt the plane begin to move, as it made its way to the end of the runway. Seconds later they were pushed back into their seats as the plane accelerated down the runway, the noise becoming deafening, then the noise dropped, as the pilot rotated and the wheels left the ground. Operative Laird felt sweat run down his face, could he handle this, his first flight? He looked about the planes interior. He was sitting at the back, the others were in front of him, and he could hear snippets of their conversations. A sudden flash of light caught his eye, lightening! He gripped his armrests. The stewardess served drinks and snacks, he quickly downed the whiskey, feeling the warmth spread throughout, perhaps a few of these will help him relax.

The flight proved a rough one, the weather got worse and worse, he heard the crew talking about shifting their flight path to try and find a smoother path, away from the worse part of the storm. Even after the first two refuelling stops, and cargo drop offs the storm persisted. Now was the journey over the mountains, no more cargo. He heard the crew talking over the microphones about trying to fly a path to the south, and arrange a new refuelling stop. The take-off was rougher, and as the plane flew, it was buffeted by heavy winds, the flashes of lightening became more frequent. He looked around the small interior, were those parachutes in the back? Maybe we should be wearing them. He unbuckled his seatbelt, "There are parachutes back, and we should put them on." The others turned around staring at Laird, by now dishevelled and frantic looking, eyes wide. "Hey, calm down, it will alright." "Just a bad storm, don't worry, the pilots are well trained." "They know what they are doing." Laird screamed "NO!, we're gonna all die unless we turn around and land!" Suddenly there he was in the aisle at the back of the plane, gun in hand. Some of the other operatives stood, "Hey take it easy, you're letting this go to your head." "Yeah, don't do anything to ruin your career and future." "We are all going to be okay." Laird reached back for a parachute, "I will be okay, you six are not. You'll see, either this plane ride gets you or our boys waiting will, in Seattle will." Frowns appeared on some of the faces, "what'ya mean our boys?" “Wait a minute, he's the spy!" "Yeah, he is one of the Fatman's lackeys." "Get 'im!" With that the ones closest to Laird tried rushing him, some climbing over their seats. The pile of men soon fell to the narrow aisle, with the rocking and rolling of the plane in the winds. Suddenly the plane shook violently. Looking out of the port window barko78 exclaimed, "Fire, the engines on fire!" From the cockpit frantic calls of MayDay were heard, the planes pitched over, and started going down. A gunshot was heard, followed by another, screams filled the cockpit as the lights went out.

It was a cold wet morning, early, too early for Sam, but he had work to do. As he made his way to the building with his office, he stopped by the newsvendor for the early edition. PRIVATE PLANE LOST. ALL FEARED DEAD. SEARCHERS ON WAY. Sam stared down at the bundle of papers on the sidewalk, unable to move. The cigarette dropped from his fingers, MarsEnglish, Midoio, Treebeard, jamiecm, TreadwayJohnA, barko78, and Laird all lost, gone. Damn it all. He dropped the coins on the vendor’s magazine stack, grabbed a paper and rushed up to his office.

I found a new "shaving mug." It's a 3/4 cup plastic measuring cup with vertical sides I scavenged from my kitchen. The shrunken Williams puck fits in it perfectly. The one cup measuring cup would work perfectly for a new puck. The "mugs" are shallower than my old cup, so it's easier to reach the soap.

Yesterday, I stopped by Target to pick up something and stopped by the shaving aisle. They took out all the brushes including Cremo products. All the Van der Hagen products except for one of the razors are gone. All that's left is some Proraso tubes of cream. I suspect those will disappear when they are sold out. Don't worry. I'm not tempted to buy anything.

The display for Gillette cartridges has gotten much bigger.

I'm still on track to get 166 shaves from my first puck of Williams. I found it lathers better with lukewarm water. It's better if I use it every day.

I'm shaving faster now. My average for the last 19 shaves has been 8:33 including cleanup. I only do two-pass shaves as they work as well as three-pass shaves.

It’s sad about the pullback of shave products by some of the brick and mortar retailers.

It will likely take about 20 years, but I think large stores are sinking into oblivion. Their profits are down about 40-50% just in the last five years. They are trying to create an online presence, but there is no competing with Amazon. I'm pretty sure Amazon is creating the websites in the background.
