Mystery hones... Let's see what you have

It could be a Pyrenees but it also looks very much like a Pike black diamond. From my memory I recall the black diamond is a little finer. PBD was well regarded in it's day for being fast but somewhat fine at the same time. Good for it's intended purpose. I use mine fore sharpening fishing hooks because it looked like the old owner used it in a similar manner.

You are probably right. I have never seen a Pike Black Diamond before that I know of. A quick google didn't pull up a lot either. Saw an old catalog ad that showed one 10" and called it a mica schist - so very likely what it is like you said. Sure appreciate the info on it and your reply.

Here is another I would appreciate any info on. Some kind of nagura stone I think even though it is kind of large. Found it in my grandfathers house 20+ years after he passed. He traveled a lot and used to bring back woodworking and carving tools from Japan. He mostly used king water stones and electric Makita but still found this in his work bench. Looks used so maybe he was truing up stones? I will never know. Remaining label says Matsunaga Stone Co.

I recently picked this up from eBay. The previous owner said he used it as a finisher. Can anyone provide me any information on what is could be.

See post #8. Unsure what they are. Like I said in the description, they work best as a prefinisher but you can shave off of them fine. Half my beard is gray and I have dermatitis so I tend to go past the limit of what these seem to hit on sharpness just to save a pass. It's an annoyance, the skin deal started in the last few years. That and the white fields in my beard. Stones I used to shave off of I tend not to anymore. Weren't you going to back a coti with that? If it mates up well size wise it is a good idea.

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it. I didn’t think it would be a finisher but at least it looks cool when wet. Thanks again.

You should get an improvement off that coming off a lot of coticules. May lose some smooth but more sharp. Wet it and put a pea of dish soap or glycerin and you shouldn't have to wait long to get an aggressive undercut. I am not sure what they are, but I think they may be from north america. They just don't seem hard enough to be uk, they don't remind me of the german slates at all, and I don't read them as french just by the nature of them. Don't think they are from vermont either, variable as vt slates are, every piece I have had is harder than any of these I have or have had. Always felt like the saw marks on the one you have could have been a clue but had no luck.

I picked up two stones of off eBay. I am trying to get a progression set up. The second stone I picked up, I am almost sure it’s a Rouge.

Let me know what you think.

What is this stones story??? JGES Reform Brocken extrafein. It looks to be a synthetic coticule. Even though it is labeled fine, it is on the course side. It is 2x4 with a nice stamped surface.

Synthetic coticule, but yes very coarse. I had one, measured the particles and it is like 500/2000k if memory serves. There’s a thread here about it... maybe 2015 era?

Thanks, found the thread. I would put this one in the 100/2000K neighborhood. I found it at a estate sale. Was rummaging thru a box with German Octoberfest souvenirs and this was in with it. Maybe some alcohol induced shopping. I do have several synthetic coticules that are nothing like this JGES. Way finer, even improves a Coti edge when they start to tug.

Recent one, haven't done much with it yet. Big gray black brick. Tiny little surface features. I have a feeling it will be in that hum drum crop, but it may well surprise me. Finally got around to testing this just now. Took a pipe razor off a coti to this. Overall, the edge took on a finer sheen visually, but it left the odd rogue scratches. Edge looks straight and it is treetopping but in that violent sort of way that is giving me pause. Have a feeling it is going to be one of those unforgiving sorts of edges. Made no odd sounds/didn't feel off on either strop so I don't think it has any traces of foil.

This is is not a mystery that it is a synthetic hone. It is interesting mystery that it ended up in a Florida flea market. A hone that is embossed “Paraguassu Ind. Brasil Eira” and stamped on the side “Made In Brazil”. It is a nice size of 8.25 x 2.25 x .750. I did not treat or condition this hone but it feel to be equivalent to my S.R.D. Quick & Easy Tool Stone. I find the strangest items at the dirt mall

Today’s visit to a thrift store that just moved yielded some scores. Being they moved, all the junk was gone but these two hones were in plain site. A Japanese water stone and a Norton hone. The first question I have is who made the waterstone. I do not recognize the trademark. Maybe some members with much more Japanese experience than myself, @Gamma @Steve56 @alx gilmore or others might have seen the mark. And if I am lucky, translate the stamps. It is marked by hand 1.5 K on the box, but it feels a lot finer. Will lap and take for a ride. The second question is on the Norton. Is this “A Norton Razor Hone” or is this “The Norton Razor Hone”. The Norton is the typical 5x2 with no box. One the end, there appears to be a ghost image of a fine-corse stamp. The camera does not pick it up. I think it is “The” and want to give it the respect it deserves

Only Tim would find a norton razor hone at a thrift store. That may be your most expensive find yet. Congrats!

Lol. A nearly $1000 stone in a thrift store. The man sold his soul.

Thanks Gentlemen for the special words. And there is one of my problem, I use all my good luck up on stuff in the wild and there is no luck left when it comes to the special 6 numbers two times a week.
