Your favorite board games...

My wife and I recently bought our dream house, and as a result we are entertaining more and more friends. Generally these are dinner and drinks affairs. Recently we thought we might change it up a bit, we had 6 people over and thought we'd try a game. We played 'Apples to Apples' and everyone had an absolute blast! We are interested in expanding out stable of board games, but I thought I'd check in with the brain trust here at B&B for some fun suggestions! If it helps, the gang is early 30's, as far as age group.

What are your favorite board games/ social games while entertaining?

I recommend "Time's Up". You have to make your partner guess the name of a person such as Abraham Lincoln or James T. Kirk. In the first round you can say anything that is not part of the name; in the second round you can use a single word or pantomime or hum or whistle a tune; the third round has no words and requires great creativity. Also "Encore" where you have to sing a song with a key word such as "California". Both lots of fun.

Not a board game exactly, but take a look at Killer Bunnies. Kind of zany, off the wall humor, plenty of fun with a group. Can take a while to play if you really want (like a couple of hours).

"Pit" and "Dutch Blitz". Both are crazy, fast paced card games that keep you on your toes. Lots of fun for 4 or more players. Pit is commodities trading and Dutch Blitz is, well, hard to describe.

Assuming you're talking casual boardgames and not the "5000 pieces and 48 hours to learn the rules" type of boardgame that many people play, I love Cranium. It's a good party game.

As far as party games, I like Apples to Apples and Cranium. Honestly I don't play a lot of party games.

Also on my shelf:
Battles of Westeros (Song of Ice and Fire themed Battlelore game, haven't tried it yet, still putting together)
A Game of Thrones
Arkham Horror
Memoir '44
Battlestar Galactica w/ Pegasus Expansion
Axis and Allies: D-Day
Heroclix
Starcraft: The Board Game
Blokus
Pandemic
Puerto Rico
Settlers of Catan
Carcassone

We love board games in our house.
+1 for Pit. It can get to be a huge ruckus when it's going. You need the right group, but it's a hoot.
Stock Ticker is one of my favourites. But I don't know if they produced it outside of Canada.
Catch Phrase is the one I'd recommend for your group.
Cranium (and it's variants) is fun too.

Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly were my favorites, although have never tried many different games. Do not get to play often as SWMBO is a poor looser (and generally a worse player) which does not turn out well for me. Currently, she refuses to plan ANY board games or similar with me. :thumbdown
