Razor wars - Mühle R89 versus Greencult 2.0 II

Having had a number of consecutive shaves with these razors recently, I thought it would be nice to add the shave off to my review collection.

Mühle R89 Rose Gold

I had the opportunity to get a R89 rose goldlast year for almost for free and I jumped - I was too curious to know how a staple in the DE shaving world would actually shave like. Because, let's face it - the R89 is practically on everyones search when first starting with DE shaving (or the equivalent DE89). The fact that the handle was the rose gold one was the deciding factor and I could swap it around between the R89 and R41 for example. And if it was not meant to be I wouldn´t have broken the bank. So sounded like a win-win.

According to Geo's website the R89 rose gold weighs 62g with an overall height at 95mm. I expected the handle to be smaller in width, but I am glad it is actually not. Feels great and comfortable in hand. A solid razor even though the handle is hollow. The head is made of Zamak, but the level of finish Mühle puts into their razors is top notch. I see this easily giving years and years of great shaves.

Speaking of shaves. Shaving is a delight. Smooth, simple, gives a lot of confidence and the angle is quite wide so this is a razor that provides something for all types - steep or shallow. Despite reading other reviews my impression is that this razor is actually very different from the KCG razor. Easy DFS++/BBS levels whereas this was the initial struggle I had with the KCG that lead me to try out other razors. The KCG is a four pass razor for me whereas this R89 shines within 3 passes and a touch up. Really nice. An excellent razor for beginner and veteran in my mind that can give you a smooth result while being in autopilot mode.

Greencult 2.0 II SB

Usually the GC2 is delivered with the II baseplate, but on the Fairschenkt website you can choose your own baseplate. I have the II baseplate and to me the GC2 is simply amazing with it. I don't like the OEM handle at all. I have hand polished the entire razor to get rid of the beadblasted finish it comes with. Using the OEM handle the GC2.II weighs 126 grams with a blade gap of .65mm and blade exposure of .10mm (both recorded on the bottom of the baseplate). I like the razorhead a lot. For this review series I used the Mühle handle. Green Cult is a razor system where you can adjust for gap and exposure by simply switching baseplates. We also see this with the Game Changer and Lupo series. And recently Fairschenkt added the option of having open comb baseplates.

Shaving with the GC2.II is an equal delight. It is very different from the R89 of course most prominently in its positive blade exposure. Opposite to the R89 it has more tendency to bite depending on the blade you use. The R89 in contrast feels almost safe with any blade. There were times when I considered getting additional baseplates, but each time I use the II plate I remind myself that I really don't need anything else (I am a daily shaver).

Notes

I used these two razors the past two weeks and I had nothing but great shaves. Titans are always a little rough for me on the first shaves and that is reflected in the FIS scores for those days. In addition I needed to adjust for the positive exposure of the GC2.II equally impacting FIS scoring. In terms of effectiveness I see much closeness. Shaves were very comparable overall in feel and execution. I am still giving this one to the Mühle - pure autopilot pleasure and as far as I am concerned a superb razor for veteran and neophyte alike. The true star of these shaves is the Dorco Titan by the way. Two excellent weeks of shaves with one blade. Marvellous. The pairing with the R89 was pure bliss. A very smooth and effective combination.

Razor: Muhle R89 (5)
Blade: Personna Platinum Chrome - IP Red (1)
Preshave: Cereve Hydrating Facial Cleanser
Brush: na
Lather: Melaleuca Alloy Gel
Aftershave: Cold water rinse;

No nicks; No irritation; Very Close; Very Smooth; Pleasant DFS+ shave.

I just had a wild hair to do a late afternoon shave.

The R89 is my second razor and has hundreds of shaves on it. My shave app does not think so.

Cheers!!!

Thanks Gene @GBerry - sounds like the R89 alright. Personna blades vary in results for me, although the Red is always nice to use.

Cheers,

Guido

I went through several 100 packs of the IP Reds. So it was an appropriate choice. I’m definitely a better shaver now. No razor burn and post shave balm not needed.

Cheers!!!
