LAMBDA ARES BRONZE PASS AROUND

It's probably obvious to others, but I can't quite get my mind around to the best shave angle. With the Athena, I've pretty much followed the sound... Where should I start with the Ares, went I get mine in my hands? With most razors, I start with the handle parallel to my face (steep), lift the handle until I feel the blade engage and make minor adjustments to find the sweet spot.

With the Ares, should I start with the cap resting on my face, the handle perpendicular to my face and follow my normal pattern to find the sweet spot?
Ares likes a little steeper angle compared to the Athena.

The razor arrived yesterday, and I was able to use it for the first time today.

Build Quality & Aesthetics: As already addressed by others, the razor is absolutely stunning. The design of both the Ares and Athena screams "Greek." Even before actually holding one, I have always viewed both razors as two of the most gorgeous razors being made. Ares is basically a mini work of art, which could be displayed as shaving art (if there is such a thing :biggrin1:)

I was fortunate to visit Athens while in the Navy. The handle with how the head sits on top of it definitely reminds me of the large Parthenon pillars that left me in awe while there. @Lambda Razors deserves a ton of praise for the design of their razors. It is easy to tell a lot of thought and passion went into how this razor would look and feel. It is very unique compared to other razors.

The build quality is simply elite. It is weighted nicely and I find the bronze color very appealing. I was a bit surprised about that because I normally do not gravitate to gold or similar type colors. The bronze, however, has a masculine look that is also very elegant.

The presentation is the best in the business. I love the wooden box it comes in. It is very sturdy and, like the razor, extremely well made. @Lambda Razors again clearly put a lot of thought into the design of the box. From the engraving to the hinges to the magnets use to hold the box close, the box in undoubtedly first class. It even still has a wood smell. All other manufactures should take note of what @Lambda Razors is doing. The build quality of the wooden box puts the entire presentation over the top and others should consider doing the same in my opinion.

Shave: The shave was very unique for me. I have never used an open comb razor before the Ares. I used an AccuThrive blade with Ethos Dragonsbeard. My first shave with that soap. I took Wally's advice and went slow with no pressure. Finding the right angle was a bit of a challenge at first. I expect part of the issue was due to feeling an open comb razor for the first time. Once I found what felt right, the shave became very smooth with no issues. Although the razor is definitely more efficient than the mild razors I normally use, I was very surprised that it did not feel too aggressive. I was originally apprehensive about joining the pass around based upon my misguided belief that the razor would be too aggressive for me. I did not find that to be the case.

For the shave, I did my normal two passes with cleanup. The result was excellent. With the Accuthrive, the razor easily glided across my face and cut through the stubble without any weepers or irritation. There was no tugging or catching of any kind. The feel of the blade was more pronounced than my Oliblade at setting #2, but it was not harsh or uncomfortable. The end result was an excellent, efficient shave. I will not need to shave again for another couple of days.

A big THANK YOU to @walpan for allowing me to join the pass around and to experience his razor. I will provide my next update hopefully in a couple of days.

Cheers!!

A quick update post-ARES:

Well, after shipping the ARES on, I went back to my ATHENA. it felt like an old friend had returned! Super easy to get dialed in to drama free shaves. While not as awesome looking as the ARES, it really shaves well and is a bit easier to avoid weepers when in a hurry.

I immediately noticed the difference in the top cap and guard shape differences. For someone that likes mild razors, I would have to give the nod to the ATHENA but, the ARES is still a fine choice for most people unless they have light whiskers where the ARES is massive overkill as it shaves a lot like my Muhle R41 and is a better whisker weapon after spending a few days camping or some other life event and not shaving resulting in my case with long wirey whiskers that need razor up to the challenge.

Lastly, the weight and warm feel of the bronze brass (darn auto-correct) makes both of these awesome razors to use in my case. Lamba brass (darn auto-correct) is simply a nicer experience that my all stainless Edwin Jagger 3oneSix and Muhle Rocca, though its Birch handle sure is pretty too! Lambda brass (darn auto-correct) is also a different formulation from the brass (darn auto-correct) in other razors I have been around and simply has a nicer feel, or 'hand', IMHO.

Both of these Lambda razors are functional pieces of art worthy of dressing up any shave den or bathroom counter!

Sid, I am sure you meant to say that the Athena is Bronze not Brass. The Bronze is also a higher quality than you would normally get with other razors. I have used the both the Ares and the Athena on daily shaves and find that they both work exceptionally well. I find that the Ares, although more efficient than the Athena, is also wonderfully smooth and comfortable and can be used as a daily shaver. I do not have coarse hair.
Simply put, there is no better razor out there for looks and performance than the Lambda razors. There are some that are close but not better.

I have used Ares a couple more times since my initial shave. I learned a few things that I hope are helpful to others.

First, I agree with @gdawg55 that a steeper angle works best with the Ares. I do not feel the comb at this angle and the razor becomes very smooth. @sidpost pictures in post #138 also appear to support the idea of using a slightly steeper angle.

Second, Ares performs best with a sharp blade. My normal combo preference is a mild razor with a sharp blade. This combo just works for me. At the slightly steeper angle, Ares has a mild/medium feel to me. This opens the door to using an Accuthrive (formerly med prep) blade, and this combo rocks!! The performance is excellent. If you do not have an Accuthrive, I highly recommend using the sharpest blade you are comfortable with. I expect a Nacet, Bic Platinum Chrome, Gillette 7 O'Clock Black, etc. to all work nicely.

Third, in addition to being efficient in cutting whiskers, Ares is amazingly efficient in lather management. I have been a bit mesmerized watching the combs direct lather through the openings. The lather easily passes through without interfering with blade performance. There is little to no residual lather on my face after a pass. It uses and processes lather better than any other razor I have used. This results in limiting unnecessary strokes, which helps eliminates irritations. The design of the razor is simply superb.

Fourth, my only slight knock about the the razor is that the handle can become a bit slippery. I do not have any issues with the razor when actually shaving. The razor can, however, start to slide when I hold it upside down to rinse it in a bowl of water. The bottom of the razor prevents it from sliding too far or out of my hand. Nevertheless, I get a little startled when it moves even a little while rinsing. I learned to overcome this by simply holding the razor firmer when rinsing.

I am definitely enjoying Ares and will post again in a couple of more days. Thanks again Wally! (@walpan)

Spot on with that observation! First shave while rinsing it off when finished, I had a little shave soap on my hand and that darn razor slid through my fingers until I cupped it with my other hand! After that, I made sure my "lather hand" was clean and dry which really helped the handle grip while rinsing it off before I put it up for the day.

The slippery handle issue is interesting. I have seen others claim the same problem. I have not experienced that issue, probably because I have my pinky finer on the bottom of the razor supporting it. I will try not doing that and see if the slide happens to me. Sid, I am glad you didn't drop the razor :)

Yep, a little startling but, it was over my sink so no real risk of something bad happening. Just totally unexpected at the time! The column "base" probably would have caught it but, that was the first one to ever slide in my hand like that so unexpected and it was a bit hard on my blood pressure even though it was easily caught with my other hand before it slid out of my hand or even hit the column base. I should note it was upside down as I was cleaning the swarf out after my shave with a normal "grip" which isn't super firm since I encounter a lot of ladies in daily life and don't want my "farm" hands to grip them like I do a hammer, T-post driver or, firewood. A softer touch with my razors also works better for following the contours of my face so I don't end up looking like a Halloween venue worker! 🎃👻⚰️

Iridian

Cool and slimy
I am absolutely loving the pinky rest. I personally like long handles, my 10 cm Barberpole from Timeless for instance, so I would not mind an even longer handle for Ares and Athena. But most people like 85 mm - ish, the Ares is supposedly 95 mm. I googled that, so might be wrong, but it is fairly long.

The pinky butt rest is a rare thing, actually I haven't seen it on a CNC-ed razor yet at all, and cannot even remember any zamac razor with this feature.

And it is awesome. This said, I would not find the handle slippery without this extra either.

When I think about slippery, take a look at DSCosmetics clone of the Razorock SuperKnurl. The RazoRock handle has a knurling so raw, you could use it as a file and escape from prison in some old movie. No exaggeration, it really hurts to grip that one tight.

But try that with the very same handle from DSCosmetics. You can tighten your fist and it can still slip. They even managed to polished the knurling slippery. I like their razors and handles, but this is their negative hallmark for sure. I bet the pyramids of Giza were build by transporting the large blocks effortlessly on DSCosmetic handles. Time travel and aliens were involved as well, this is why this fact is not yet widely known.

It's NOCvember, No OC November, a pity, I recently tried the Astor with my Athena and it was the best shave I had with my Athena yet, and I had stellar shaves already. I was totally surprised by this, I do not rate the Astor high at all, I like the BIC Platinum much better in general.

My Ares shave with an Astor has to wait for a while, but I am extremely curious.

Some might remember me making friendly fun by reminding people now that they all got an Athena, that the Ares shaves even better...^^ I still think so, so... damn, I was already very close to get one of these Stainless Ares razors not so long ago.

But I am holding back. Some might noticed that I am strongly advocating for Lamda razor stands, I still do! :)

I might get another Ares and three fitting stands for all of them (2x Ares, SS+Bronze, 1x Athena. But no worries people, you won't get my bronze Ares for a discount. I have not ever sold a razor from my collection, so stop trying, though 2x Ares is indeed quite wasteful. But I also have some 5 or 6 versions of the R41 head here, so it is not as if I am not used to having near doubles).

The only reason not to get the Ares is if you for some most likely visual reason prefer the Athena, both are very close, or shaving wise just want a lot more aggression.

The mix of efficiency and effortless ease of use makes this razor suitable for about anyone. I really wonder when some find it too aggressive, I would rather even dial it up a bit, but we are all different in our preferences, after all.

This said, I think the Olympian Gods want the Ares and the Athena to be made of bronze, they look better that way, even I as hardcore steel afficionado agree to that.

If your wives are desperate to find something for xmas for you... before you end up with not quite as exciting things like trousers or jackets, or a joint 5-star holiday with the wife (for whom is this actually a present, scnr), you might gently link her straight to the Lambda website and account registration, or whereever else you can get the Ares from. :)

I wouldn't call the Athena super aggressive, more along the lines of mildly aggressive. I do know it doesn't like the Personna blades though, at least for me.

The Ares is a touch more aggressive but, not bad and not R41 bad either. It is a thing of beauty but, the shave angle is a lot more critical with this razor. The curve of the head shape is a lot different than my other razors so, it is a bit more challenging to get a BBS shave dialed in. Muscle memory let me go back to the Athena after a couple of Ares weeks and I immediately got a DFS with two strokes! The Ares does work better than the Athena though when I let my whiskers grow out.

IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME SHAVE

My time with the Ares has ended. It has been cleaned, boxed carefully, and shipped to @Leverspro. I hope he enjoys it as much as I did. I really cannot thank Wally (@walpan) enough for allowing me to participate in this pass around and providing us one of his fabulous razors to use. Wally is such a great contributor to B&B.

For my final shave with the the Ares, I used as many Greek products as possible to honor the artisans in that county who are making just amazing shaving products:

Razor: Ares--Greek! One of the most exquisite razors being made. It is absolutely stunning and extremely smooth.
Blade: Bic Chrome Platinum--Greek! A sharp blade that is a great choice for Ares.
Soap: HAGS Ritual--Greek! Dimitrios Charokopos's products are outstanding. All of his bases are excellent and a must try if you like cologne scents.
Aftershave: HAGS Ritual--Greek! Ritual is a homage to Initio Parfums Prives' Oud for Greatness and simply smells fantastic.
Brush: Oumo ST-1. Well, I do not understand Chinese at at all...So, as the the idiom goes..."It's All Greek to me." :biggrin1:

I have used Ares as much as possible since my last post. My goal was to see if I would enjoy it as an everyday razor. I changed soaps-even using a cream once, pre-shaves, and blades for each shave. Ares performed marvelous with everything I threw at it. My final thoughts/conclusions are:

1. Ares is a extremely well-made, gorgeous razor. It is unique and really stands out among other razors. Ares and its sister Athena look Greek, and @Lambda Razors should be proud of their designs. Lambda's packaging and presentation are also superior to anything I have seen from other manufactures.
2. Sharp blades work nicely with Ares. My favorite blade was the Accuthrive followed by the Bic. I did not have an Astor to try. I found the razor to be closer to the mild side once I found the best angle. A bit steeper angle worked best for me. Because my favorite razor/blade combination is sharp blade with a mild razor, I was right at home with Ares despite being a relatively new wet shaver. Ares is efficient but not aggressive.
3. Even with a sharp blade and open combs, Ares can be a daily shaver. I did not have any irritations using Ares as a daily shaver, despite having sensitive skin. I also did not have any weepers or other issues.
4. Ares is definitely a razor I would like to eventually own. Although metals that need polishing are not my ideal choice, I agree with @Iridian that it looks best in bronze. It just adds an extra artistic element to the razor.

Thank you again Wally for this pass around and @Lambda Razors for making such a superb razor. After using Ares, I now have a crazy itch to try Athena. Wally, When are you planning to start that pass around? I am in!!

Cheers everyone!!

That is a wonderful review and very accurate. I am glad you enjoyed your t with it. As for an Athena pass around - I’ll think about it, but definitely not this year.

hello all. I received the Athena a few days ago but didn't really enjoy the experience. Would the Ares v2 be more up my alley if my favourite razors are the Yates EH/H and TiBird? I find that I prefer some blade feel and auditory feedback from my razors.

Maybe the Ares would do it for you, but first, what blade did you use in the Athena and what angle did you use?
I have found that a steep angle and a very sharp blade is the trick with the Athena for most of us.

I used the Wizamet. I did get the shave right but like I said, I prefer more aggressive razors with feedback hence why I'm curious about the Ares.
