What's new

What's your A-list for special occasions?

I'm sure this has been asked before to death, but what the hell...

Say you have a hot date. Or an appearance on TV. Or a huge job interview for the dream gig, or whatever. What heavy artillery do your bust out with? I'm talking about the stuff you may keep safe for special occasions but don't use daily in order to have it when you REALLY need it.

Mine:

T&H preshave oil
T&H West Indian Limes cream w/ brush
Jagger 89 (whatever razor) with...
Gillette 7 O'Clock blades
Witch Hazel (always)
Trumper's Lime Skin Food if it's dry or Lucky Tiger Bay Rum if it's humid.

Easy answer
What I use at least 2wice a week... Gramps 105 year old straight, Kent badger, Gentlemen's Best Sig line soap, WH, Gent's Best AS

I was thinking clothes when I first read the title, which would be what I just put on for a wedding that I need to leave for in about 10 minutes. Navy blue suit, powder blue shirt, blue bow tie and burgundy cap toe shoes with burgundy belt, no braces today.

Aftershave was SMN lavender.

Here is my current A list for special occasions:

Proraso pre-shave cream (Green or White);
Castle Forbes shaving cream (Lime or Lavender);
Simpson Duke 3 Best brush;
Edwin Jagger DE89 razor;
Red Pack Israeli Personna blade;
Alum Block;
Proraso aftershave balm.

1974 Gillette Superspeed
1974 Gillette SuperSilver DE Blades
Simpsons Special - in Best Badger
TOBS Mr. Taylor Shaving Cream
TOBS Mr. Taylor AS
TOBS Mr. Taylor Cologne

I've never really thought about my 'Dream Team' shaving kit before but this would be it. The 1974 SS and blades are from my birth year so they are a little special for me because of this.

To my mind the TOBS trifecta is a lovely combination. Not really high-end, but good quality and a little understated. The fragrance is certainly not one that will be instantly recognisable to 99.9% of people. I like that it's not a mainstream fragrance.

Even waking up is a special occasion so it wouldn't be much different than most other days.

Vintage Blades Lavender or TOBS Sandalwood cream
Merkur 34G with Merkur blade :thumbup1: (instead of others in my rotation like a SS or Tech w/ a Red)
Rooney 3/1 Super Silvertip
Dickinson WH
Nivea Sensitive ASB

My EJ Chatworth Barley is my closest shaving DE, but if it really were a special occasion, I'd be leery about getting nicks from a razor I don't use much. I'd have to use this one for several days leading up to the big day to get used to it.

I'd use my G1 injector and Proraso cream to maximize my chances of getting a really close shave, and I'd make sure I had plenty of time. Other than that, nothing special. There is nothing that I would use only on a special occasion.

So far, TOBS Lavendar gets the nod every Sunday and almost every special occasion.

The complete treatment:

New Astra blade
EJ Badger brush
TOBS bowl lathered in extra hot bowl
4 pass shave

Nivea ASB
Tim McGraw Southern Fragrance cologne

Last special occasion was my brother's wedding where I was best man. The shave kit was my favourite Tech, Feather blade, TOBS Mr Taylor cream, my Tweezerman brush and Old Spice A/S. Excellent shave, not a nick or bit of irritation and I got complimented on how nice I smelled hours later. I'd use this set up for a shave before any major occasion. The Tech and Feather is one mean combination - close and yet forgiving shave every time even with the massively heavy stubble I have.

I also thought clothes.

My first and foremost image is new-years and very special parties. Although I do have my own tux, my favorite is a burgundy silk dinner jacket, cuff links and black trousers w/a small black stripe down the sides and suspenders handed down by my father. I will always miss him.

Other than that it's a good Feather in my Bull Mastiff (old type) w/ Gucci Pour Homme.
