What Would You Do

I got a TI razor from a member who is having subpar shaves with it. I believe he bought it new from AOS. It did not shave out of the box. He took it back to the store and had them hone it. He tried shaving with it again and still was having issues. He sent it to me to check it out and see if the edge is acceptable or not.

I barbicided the razor and stropped it. Failed my HHT which means it is not going to be a good shave. I took a pass anyway just to be thorough.

Here is the first pass results. Not good.

Not good. Tugging pulling and hairs left behind.

I took a swipe with a proper edge. Ahh much better

I got ready to hone it for him, took a look at the bevel and found this at the toe.

I think it left the factory like that since the spine does not show corresponding wear.

I told the member if it were mine I'd take it back and get a different razor. While I could have "fixed it" it would require some metal removal.

I think this razor slipped through QC at the factory.

Would you guys keep it or send it back.

I'd send it back. When you spend hard earned money on a well known make of razor you expect to have something to show for it without having to pimp it like a GD.

So you guys think it was a TI issue? I was spazzing out on the phone with the Dm of aos just now. I will be hearing back from them by Monday he stated

I think it left the factory with those issues. You can see honed out toes on razors, but usually after many times on the stone, there is usually matching spine wear.

I'll send it back, no doubt about that. Anyway, I'm pretty sure Alfredo can somehow take care of that issue with great precision. No doubt about that, too. :wink2:

well, maybe sad to see on a new razor, but not the end of the world.
I have quite a few that have decreased toe alignment, but the blade has enough body to shave just fine.
I use the toe area for small, harder to reach zones.
Hard to imagine the size we are talking without seeing the whole blade, but I've plenty of smiling razors, and this appears to be slight half smile, yes?

yeah that's what the plan is, they wont tell me if theyre accepting it until Monday! can you believe that?! lol. I told them if I don't hear from them by Monday morning, corporate will hear from me Monday afternoon.

They should take it back. I would be surprised if they wont. You might even want to print the pic that Alfredo posted to take with you.

After reading and commenting on the last 'AOS thread' recently, I had occasion to stop by a new AOS that they just recently put in around here. Walked around a bit; had a chat with the woman minding the store; and eventually asked her for her thoughts about the shave readiness of the straights. You never heard such a glowing testimonial. I asked if they send them out for honing prior to sale and of course, the answer was no, 'but they come extremely sharp and 100% shave ready right from TI and Dovo'.
Right - and I'm Warren Buffett's closest living heir.....:a6:

Think the cutlers edge place swiped it through a knife grinder and that's how the edge got ground without a spine hit.

I'd chalk it up to plain ignorance and not malfeasance. They're nice enough people, just sorely uneducated about what they sell.
Many folks have said that sales clerks shouldn't be expected to know as much as members of B&B know, and in the case of a store like Macys, where sales people rotate, I can honestly see that.
But in a designated AOS stand alone store, there ought to be some minimum of knowledge, either provided by corporate to the employees, or self obtained by the simple act of reading.

Still, at $175-200 per razor, the blade should have no smile at all. I'll admit I am somewhat jaded on the quality control issue with TI. My wife bought me a TI for our wedding anniversary last August and when I opened the box, I find the wedge and scales cracked.

Honestly, I'm more disturbed by the bizarro scratch pattern than the drop off at the toe.
I'm not saying I'd be pleased with finding that issue on a new razor, but if it's an entry level TI I'd probably just hone that section into a smooth smile before considering taking the whole edge up to level it out. If it was a high-end model I'd send it back. Shouldn't be like that at either end of the spectrum though.
Was that one of the AOS branded models?
