What's new

What woould youse guys do?

BigFoot

I wanna be sedated!
The cost of assault style rifles is starting to come back down. I was going to fork out the dough for an Armalite AR-10 before the big scare.

I would still like the AR-10 but .308 is still damn hard to find and expensive. The .223 is a bit small for big game and that would be one of my primary uses for this rifle so I really don't want a true AR-15, but it is avaliable in so many calibers now.

Oh the choices, what would youse guys do?

BTW if I go AR-10 I would stick with Armalite......they made the 1st and IMO still the best.

Regular AR from a quality manufacturer (LaRue, BCM, Daniel Defense, Noveske, Colt, etc) in 5.56 for general purpose use. You can use 5.56 on hogs, coyotes, and similar.

Add a 6.5mm Grendel upper and you can take anything up to elk in size out to 400m.

.223 is not legal for big game in my state. Check your state hunting regulations before you consider this cal as a hunting/sporting firearm

If you want .308 and you want that "assault/war/military" appearance, I think my first choice would be an HK-91 or an FN FAL.

If you are looking for "new" then you are very limited.

As usual, we agree :thumbup1:

"Youse guys"?? Guess if you were talking to a Western PA crowd it would be "yinz"...anyway-

5.56 is a weak sister for anything much larger than the aformentioned hogs, coyotes (I personally use a .45-70 Govt. for hog. Too much room for error with a 5.56 unless your shot is spot on), and small Southern deer (a.k.a. Dog with horns).

Think you're having a hard time finding .308?? Go on a Grendel expedition; let me know how it turns out. I'd consider looking at a decent used AR 15 (or one of the new S&W Sport models) and a modestly priced .30-06 (like a Savage). You can probably get the pair for <$1500 and then you are set to go for just about anything you run across in the US.

it seems like you might be interested in this http://www.impactguns.com/colt-308-ar10-le901-16s-rifle-16in-multi-caliber-308-556223-le901-16s.aspx , and if you are serious about sticking with armalite, you could always get one in .243, there are several factory loads for varmint hunting, and its the smallest caliber you can hunt deer with in texas, plus when you want to go to the .308, all youll need is a new barrel chambered in .308 because the .243 is simply a .308 win necked down to 6mm. or since the ar-10 comes in both calibers you could just get a new upper.

+! on the Grendel. I like it so well I built three rifles in that caliber. When I started it
was not a standardized cartridge, but is now, so I got about 3000 rounds of 7.62x39 brass and simply resized to the 6.5 Grendle, loaded and fire formed. I have not fireformed but a relative few of the cases but they work fine, and were a fraction of the cost of Lapua cases which were all that were commercially available at the time. Loaded ammo and cases are relatively easy to find now. In a carbine or standard rifle weight is within a few ounces of a similar AR in 5.56. A couple of my guns are long range types with heavy 24" barrels, more suited to varmiting or benchrest target work.

Also, the current Armalite is not the original Armalite. They didn't make the first AR-10, and the current Armalite, while decent, is far from the best in .308 AR's.......

Whatever you do, run the hell away from DPMS.
