What to get my Dad?

I'm gonna' be buying my Dad a DE razor, but I'm not sure which one to get him. He has a TOUGH beard. He goes through 3 disposables a shave. He's even broken heads on them because they cut so poorly for him and he's had to push that hard. My Dad has used DE's before, so he has plenty of experience with them. I'm looking to spend about $28-35 dollars.

Thanks.

For a tough beard, go with a Merkur 11c (heavy duty open comb), or a vintage Red Tip Super Speed (for heavier beards).

Bull Mastiff with combs maybe?

Whatever razor you get him, sounds like some Feathers could benefit him. Sounds like his beard is made of steel wool!

Maybe try an adjustable from the BST.
How old is your Dad? Maybe a birth year razor for him would be a nice thought. If you know his birth year, it'd be an easy matter to see what is available.

Sounds like a Slant in combination with Feathers is the right tool, probably a 39c (Slant Hammer).

There's a good idea. Why do people switch to disposables anyway?

Thanks so far guys. I'm not exactly sure why he did. I know that he was using the brush and soap though when he did switch.

My dad was born in '61. He turned 48 in July.

haha. Yeah his beard feels like it's made out of wool. No joke. So, for sure I planned on getting some feathers for him.

The 11c is lookin' pretty good too.Would it really do the job well?

+1 for the 61 fatboy.

It's an adjustable, so he should be able to crank it up to tackle that tough beard.
I'm guessing it's not the blade going dull that causes him to go through so many razors, but the fact that they clog up on him, right?

You should be able to find one within your price range too.

I just did a quick check on the BST and found 8 Fatboys ranging from 12 to 35 dollars within the past 2 months, shaver grade to good condition, 2 of them 61's and two of them with Cases.
I think it's possible, he'd just have to do some babysitting on the BST or post a WTB thread and plead his case.

Yes you can find a G-series Fatboy for that, those are good prices. Anything more is EBay pricing .. but does the son want to give his dad an "antique" or a new razor? Both are fine, I would love a son who did that, but the paths diverge .. if he has that heavy of a beard, I can recommend the Fat Boy, or a straight.

I would go with Open Comb or Slant. Adjustable is also a good idea.

As I like to find something else... Muhle Pinsel R89 old model  I think they still sell them in Australia under Premax. That's one mean dog!

I second that, being around your dad's age and having a tough beard.

The Futur is a nice razor, but more than what you want to spend.

The 1912 GEM's also give a great shave and should be under $15 in the BST, just make sure you get the Ted Pella PTFE coated blades.

What are you getting him for cream/soap, brush and after shave?

Thanks guys!
I think I'm gonna' get him a newer one because I think he would not like the hassle (in his eyes) of cleaning it up. I'm getting him some soap (col. Conks and some Mamma bears). I also got him a boar brush (Omega) because thats what he had before and that's what he likes. Hard soap, hard brush.lol

It is actually the blades going dull on him and the clogging.

and add a little note,

"Do not apply any pressure on razor during shaving"

might need a reminder after all these years
