Somewhere to get my Fatboy tuned up.. or re-plated?

Hello all,

I picked up a FatBoy a while ago, and I don't think I've ever enjoyed shaving with a DE more... it is such a nice razor. However, I put it away for a while when I decided to grow my beard out. I returned to it only to find that it was starting to rust and pit. Furthermore, the twist adjustment to open/close the doors is somewhat loose. Are there places where I can send it to have it tuned up? Is there a service out there that can re-plate it? I'm assuming the rust means that whatever plating was on it has worn through? Any advice would be welcome!

I'm not sure where you are located, but if you are in the States, or a country where shipping to and from the States isn't an issue, I can heartily recommend Back Roads Gold... Chris does an excellent job... Here's a tread that's been running for a while where many of us post Chris' work.

NOT Razor Emporium.

See above. Black Roads Gold seems to be the general consensus favorite.

I'd give it a cleaning first. You'd be surprised how well they clean up with some Dawn, warm water, a toothbrush, some Q-tips and Maas polish.

Thanks all. This is super helpful. Thanks for the thread and the direction! I scrubbed it up when I first got it, and it looked great. Just wondering if it is worth bringing it back so it is more durable. But, you're right.. a little elbow grease goes a long way!

One of the things many resellers that specialize in razors may do is hit them pretty hard with a polishing wheel to make them look “nice.” The razor does look pretty, smooth, and shiny, but it can significantly thin the plating, causing this to occur if it’s thin enough.

For a time fatboys were particularly targeted for this and a few sellers seem to still do it. I remember one seller would consistently have his auctions go pretty high but anyone familiar with the factory finish would know something was done to give them the desirable “mirror finish.”
