What modern razor compares to a 40's SS?

:wink:Hi everyone,

Still pretty much a noob here who went back to DE shaving after getting tired of the cost of cartridges and the performance of an electric. I have been mostly using a 40's Super Speed which I bought at a yard sale a few years ago. (Didn't know what it was until I found this forum. Thank guys!!)

My question is which new razor compares in size, heft, etc to the SS? Mrs. Claus always asks what I want for Christmas and this year I would like to give her a good answer!

I really like the looks of the Merkurs and the Goodfella, are they close? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Gerry,

Go Phils! Still alive after five!!

None of them my friend, none of them.

The 40's SS is one of the best all around razors ever made. You'll be hard pressed to find better ones at twice the price.

Agreed...there is just nothing that compairs. I have one and it totally rocks.

Every time I think I should try a new fangled DE razor, the voice of reason reminds me that I need look no further than my current collection.

Agreed! I shave with a 40's SS and I would not trade it for a solid gold Merkur or Parker. It is the top of the line.

Phil's right. The '40s Super Speed is iconic for a reason and has no real competitor. But if you really want new(er), fast forward 15 years or so to the black handled Super Adjustable - a great shaver. :wink2:

What Phil said is gospel. I joined here with brand new gear and am rapidly replacing it with vintage kit that performs better, feels better and looks better.

Funny you should mention it...I shaved with my '47 SS today after a long hiatus. Wow...that razor takes a back seat to none of 'em!

I've tried some other really nice ones: Schick Injectors, GEMs, Gillette Aristocrats and Diplomats and NEWs and HD Rockets and Old Types, Slim and Fat Boy and Toggle Adjustables, but I don't know that any of them gave me a better shave than the ol' Superspeed!

Mantic is supposed to be doing a review/video on the Goodfella soon, and a buddy has one and likes it. The Merkur HD is a good "nice and shiny new razor" but it's about the only new one I have experience with. I really prefer the vintage razors.

In short, as everybody has said, you'll be hard pressed to do better than your Superspeed. (But, that's no reason not to buy a nice, shiny, new razor.)

Yes, the main reason to shave with a vintage is that there isn't anything like them.

+1 I agree nothing like a vintage shaver....

I'd recommend the Merkur Slant (37C) if you're looking for something still in production. A bit heftier than a 40s SS and it gives a great shave. There are may fans of it around here

I read the posts in this thread and I am very interested in buying a Super Speed. I saw that many of you swear by your 1940's SS. I am curious to know if there is a difference between the 1940's SS and those from the 1950's and 60's. I looked at a few on ebay and I don't see a difference. I am new to wet shaving so my eye is not a discerning as some of you. Please enlighten me to the differences. Thanks.

I love the 40s SS. I will say, however, that the Edwin Jagger DE89 comes as close to that razor as any I have ever tried. I was surprised to discover it...I never thought anything would come close...but it is a fine razor.

The only problem...minor though it is...is that it is not a TTO. It is not even a two piece...its a three piece, so changing blades can be a bit finicky.

Check out the Super Speed ID link in my signature. It should answer your questions.

If you want a "new" razor for Christmas and one that will give you a great shave, look into what Cooncatbob has to offer. You can get a nice replated "New" head and a custom handle of your choice. Except for that there aren't any that can compete with the '40's SS in the new catagory.

Thank you for the input and thoughts. I do sense a pattern here so I went out and bought a "new" 48-50 SS with plastic box for $5.00. I'll pass on other ideas to Mrs. Claus (SWMBO). The razor cleaned up nicely and works as expected. Great backup to my other 48-50 SS. Thanks again, Gerry

I'm a big fan of the Merkur slant. I have a new 37c, and a vintage one. The new one has those little dimples or divots or troughs in the cap while the vintage cap is smooth. I find that there is noticeably less drag with the new one, and I credit that to the cap design. This would be the one exception where I would recommend new vs. vintage for shaving with.
