What's new

Razor of the Year 2024

Considering that most of us are planning to enjoy a peaceful Christmas and a happy hopeful new year. I am nominating a razor I got from Ukraine a few months before they were invaded. I have a couple of razors that are rare, many that aren't, but this one leaves me pondering the precious nature of life and liberty. Every time I shave with it I think about all the lives lost and affected over there and how blessed we are to be here and safe.

I look at companies Web-site the Machine work is very very good, Photo illustrations are GREAT.

I’d have to say this ‘49 Super-Speed. It’s probably near last in the swimsuit competition, but consistently first in the talent contest.😉

I will use this sterling silver razor, handmade by a silversmith and engraved with my name, as the symbol of the year 2024.
I am very happy to see that in today's world full of mass production and CNC precision processing, there are still craftsmen inheriting the Victorian working methods.

The first time I saw this razor, its head looks very thin. I wonder how it performs overall. Is it mild or aggressive? What about its efficiency? Does it require a very narrow working angle?

This razor head has the following features:
●Full arc clamping, no gap in the base plate - such as Gillette Old Type and Fatip.
● Larger curvature – the curvature of the base is close to Timeless.
●The top cap has protrusions on the four corners to hold the blade in place, and the guard has fine lines that remind you of Gillette Tech.
●Extend the safety bar area and guide the pen strokes intuitively.

Later I discovered Baili176's Tech clone - covering the blade label, modifying the corners of the guard... the side of the blade has a large arc, while the inside is basically the same; I guess the craftsman may have used this as a reference and simplified the geometry to achieve the process conditions.
.
According to experience, the traditional full arc clamping design is less prone to error and is less likely to have problems with blade vibration and insufficient rigidity. This razor has a large curvature, a thin cap, a shallow cutting angle, and as expected, the pulling sensation on the face is low.

But not as mild as I had initially suspected.
Perhaps due to the tension of the hand-bent head, the edge of the blade has a slight "Seygus Zeppelin" inverse smile - it increases rigidity, the blade feels clear, and the efficiency is direct without being overly stimulating.

Thx for sharing so much information about this wonderful razor. lt looks like Baili176 very much.

I was able to purchase a Aylsworth Drakkant Ti on their last run and that has become my favorite razor. The shave angle just fits me perfectly and the shave is extremely smooth for the gap that is has. I didn’t pull the trigger on the new titanium apex just because I like the shave angle so much better on my Drakkant SS than my apex SS that I’m kinda waiting for others on the forum to give their take first. But back to the question, it’s Drakkant Ti for me👍🏻

This family of craftsmen usually makes sterling silver jewelry, photo frames, jewelry boxes... and razors are their newest product.

Therefore, I can understand that they are unknown in the wet shaving community, and they need to first conduct reverse research to understand the preferences of DE users.

So during the communication process, I told them that I wanted to know the thread specifications and hoped to see a side view photo of the razor head to roughly guess the efficiency of the razor and the feel of the blade. (The photos they originally provided were very simple and did not include some key size information)

Although their razor design is still in its early stages, it is a truly valuable process.

When you are ready to share the contact information I may be in line for a custom razor. Are they amenable to using a customer design or perhaps clone of an existing design? I would like one based on vintage Gillette, not sure which one but maybe an early 1900's ABC. Would be awesome in sterling silver. Might even send it off to Otto Carter to be engraved if he can find the time.

Of course, the most important thing in B&B is sharing.

They are "Fratelli Graziani" in Florence. You can contact them on Facebook, as I have asked there before. You can also find their website and introduction on Google.

But I'm not sure how much customization they can offer, firstly because they seem to have just started working on DE razors, and secondly they may have to consider the process/difficulty/cost of hand-making.

If you get better news from them, please let us know.

Thanks. I sent an email a few minutes ago to inquire if they will accept a custom design order.

If you wanna know what my aesthetic preferences are in a razor, just know that I think the Drakkant Ti is the most beautiful razor ever made. Just too bad I blew a ton of cash buying other razors just recently.
