What's new

Welfare bowl turns out great!

Noticed around the house i really had no shaving bowl, so i went out and looked for a bowl with a rough inside and that could perform the duty's of a scuttle. So preferably rather thick or with water holding to retain heat.
All the scuttles i've seen are rather expensive so that kind of was out of the picture, and all the bowls i had in the house were silky smooth on the inside...
My eye happened to catch something very nice and useful while getting a coconut drink(tough not really using it what's it for :p )

Turns out, this thing is great, before shaving i soak it together with the brush in hot water, it absorbs the heat and keeps your lather warm for like 15 mins.
Due to the rather rough inside the soap lathers up really fast, this lather is made in aprox 30 seconds from a soap bar.

p.s. Small downside is that it weighs about 7 pounds

What the carp is that and where can I get one?

It's a mortar (with pestle). Available at many kitchen and houseware stores. Especially the higher-end ones. Compared to the prices of bowls and scuttles made for shaving the prices are really quite reasonable and there are many choices of styles and sizes.

EDIT: Here is example: http://importfood.com/thaicookware.html. This is not something I own so I am not making a recommendation, just giving an example of what 30-seconds of Googling turned up.

It's a mortar & pestle set, typically used for mixing and grinding spices. It's an ages old tool of pharmacists and apothecaries. Most I've seen these days are made of marble. You should be able to find one at a kitchen supply store.

It's one of those herb smashing bowls (thats what that stone smasher is in the left bottom of the pic, has no use just there for clarification) that you can find in most oriental stores for under 10€ (or 10$ for you guys) made out of solid stone.

and yeah....dropping it is a bad idea in general

man you guys are fast

I don't know if it's a good idea: once i had one, a nice ceramic blue japanese mortar/pestle set and it was gorgeous to see...but the bowl had, on the sides and bottom, lots of rough little channels as it was fine sandpaper...The primary function was to grind pepper and other herbs so it makes sense to have asperities all around in the interior to help the task. The inside didn't have any enamel or painting, just rough beige thick ceramic.

Making short a long story, the brush was over used in such a rough surface, as it was cut 1 mm each day by scissors...

But the pestle was nice to smash hard soaps anyway and i just had to put in the microwave with some glycerine soap.

But if yours didn't have the channels and is smooth and glossy as a corn flakes bowl it could work nicely.

indeed, the inside of this bowl isn't 100% smooth but a bit rough still, will keep an eye out if my brush gets any shorter/wears down fast. In all honesty though, it's a 10 bucks brush from the body shop, i'll live even if it does ;)
