Replacing my shaving bowl ... choosing between two types

I think you made a fine choice. Since you liked your old bowl it makes sense to get something similar, and I like a handle for carrying. I put my thumb through the finger loop and my fingers into the bowl after it's cleaned. Even if it's a little damp it never slips.

I have one of these and I love it. Very easy to use.

If the soup mug has arrived, how do you like it? @JCinPA

My preference is the Captain's Choice lather bowl.

I have the ceramic one and though it has no handle, it's shape and grippy surface keep it from slipping.

Captain's Choice is a B&B Vendor and forum member, not to mention an all around gentleman.

Plus, you'll receive a bona fide artisan Potter's hand-crafted and American-made ceramic piece.

Big fan!

From the site:

Our Classic design incorporates several features into a winning combination. The low profile ensures the brush will not strike the side and the ridges on the interior expedite lathering. In addition, the sides are concave to contain the lather and the thumb rest with our logo makes for a secure grip as you hold the bowl in your palm. Perfecto!

Created by a local potter to our specifications, each lather bowl begins as a lump of clay on a potter's wheel as seen in the pictures. The beauty of this handmade item is that each one will differ slightly. The natural differences in the glaze along with the individual craftsmanship of each bowl ensures that no two will be exactly the same.* They measure approximately 4 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" deep and will appear similar to the one that is pictured.

Congratulations on finding a new bowl. My preference is for a ceramic bowl with a thumb loop.

I also have a Captain’s Choice heavy copper bowl which is very good ant though lacking a thumb loop it has a thumb depression and there is no worry about copper shattering.

My Timeless bowl is good for travelling and unbreakable. It does not have a thumb loop or thumb depression. It is also deeper than my preferred depth but works as a travel bowl.

My favorite bowl:

That's a nice bowl. I just ordered their "heavy" copper bowl today. I was debating between it and the ceramic, but the way everyone raves about the copper one, I thought I'd see what all the hype is about. I currently have a marble Beau Brummel bowl. I love it and it makes a fantastic lather, but the inside is coarse, not smooth. Some have warned me it could be damaging to my brushes, and I have fairly newly acaquired (last few months) Semogue boar hair brush. I've had a couple hairs around the periphery break on me. Don't know if it's related to that bowl or not, but I wanted to get something with a smooth interior just to be safe.

How is that ceramic one at whipping up lather?

That's awesome, and I will own that heavyweight copper bowl someday!

The ceramic bowl is great at making a lather! I'm a scooper in case I ever sell any of my stuff and I use the ceramic bowl for almost every shave. So far I haven't seen any issues with damage to my brushes.

I have two badgers and one boar and all three are holding up fine.

The curved walls make it sit very comfortably and snugly in the palm and somehow keeps almost all of the lather in the bowl without a bunch of messy spillover.

The Captain really got the size and shape dialed in perfectly. You're gonna love it!

Oh, I forgot to post about the soup bowl! It’s beautifu! For a soup bowl. Much too big for lather bowl, it’s about 6” across the top.

I actually ordered the new Captain’s Choice ceramic yesterday. Looks awesome.
Sorry to hear that . it looked The same when I saw it , that was why I posted about it.....

8.5/10, CCS. Third time with the SS razor. It’s clearly not as efficient as some of my newer designs, but it is a really fun razor to shave with. I got the Captain’s choice as a sample when I bought one of his new lather bowls, and loved it. It is a very good soft Italian soap shave, close to but not quite as good as Cella—almost though! But the scent! Wonderful. I could see myself reloading with this instead of Cella just for the strength of the scent alone, the shave is good enough, loved it! The new stoneware bowls are awesome, too!

=====
This was my first shave with the new lather bowl! It is just about perfect, IMO. Fits my medium-sized hand perfectly, the mass of the stoneware holds heat for a bit, and I like the inward folded lip which keeps the lather from spilling out the side. I don’t know if the stoneware was textured or if the glaze fires with a pockmarked finish, but it is a perfect surface for bowl lathering. The scent on the Italia soap is wonderful!

The shave quality is very good, indeed. And I’m not a tallow acolyte by any means, Haslinger and S.V. Have shown me you can get great soaps with or without it. That said, I’d give a very slight edge, emphasis on the slight, to Cella for the shave, but it’s close enough I may end up reloading my Cella with this for the scent. Made in USA, and represents us well!

I like the color of the first bowls Scott sold, but when he ramps up with the other colors, I’d suggest you get one. I’m a hybrid latherer, start in the bowl, keep it a little thick, finish on the face. I still miss my beloved Celtic mug, but this bowl made me very happy! Highly recommended!
