Wanting to learn about Bull Mastiff handles...

I believe I'm finally acquiring a razor that is compatible with the Bull Mastiff handles. I've got a Muhle R89 on the way. Now, I love the razor as it is, but is this one that I can slap a Bull Mastiff handle on? How exactly does that work? Do I have to contact Bob and tell him what kind of razor head I want to attach the handle to?

Any guidance here would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will have to ask Bob to tap the Bull Mastiff handle for metric threads. This will allow it to fit the R89 head and you will still be able to fit Gillette heads.

I own a Bull Mastiff Deluxe XL and I use it with both my EJ head and my Long Comb New head. Bob makes great handles.

I acquired a Bull Mastiff handle back in May, and I love it. I'm partial to long, heavy handles, and the BM is a monster. The magnet in the base is handy, too, for picking up a blade from a wet counter and putting it into the blade bank.

cooncatbob makes several versions of the BM. A light model and a heavy one. With and without a magnet in the handle. I have the heavy one, with magnet. Be sure to specify which one you want when you place your order.

I've used it with a Gillette Tech head and an English open comb, and it mates up with those threads perfectly. I can't testify for certain that it is compatible with the R89, but I think it is.

Even if it doesn't fit the Muhle, buy a BM anyway. There are enough compatible vintage Gillettes out there that you will find a good match. If you want, you can always have a vintage head replated so it matches the shiny new BM.

Remember, having a good handle on your razor makes just as much difference as the head geometry. And the BM is one of the best handles I've found.

This is exactly what Bob told me when I ordered mine earlier this week. I find the handle on my EJ 89L a bit to slick when wet, albeit beautiful. I think the Bull Mastiff handle will pair nicely with the Muhle head and solve the "slippery" issue for me.

The standard Bull Mastiff handle is threaded for #10-32 threads, EJ, Muhle and Goodfella use the metric M5 x 0.8, this has the same thread pitch as the #10-32 but is slightly (0.030) larger.
All I do when I get a request for metric threads is run the metric tap down the #10-32 threads and enlarge them.
The reason I don't thread everything metric in the first place is most of my business it with vintage Gillette heads and the threads on these can be worn undersize, if I use the metric thread I could have a loose fit.
I can retap a #10-32 to metric in less time then it takes to type.
Anyone can convert a handle with the proper metric tap. M5 x 0.8

Bob,

Thanks for the clarification. My birthday is in less than a month and I may be sending my wife your way for my present.

Thanks to everyone else as well. I appreciate all the input.
