But being honest many time I say I can’t believe some of the Clean Vintage stuff goes for crazy prices.

First vintage April shave (rated 8.8/10) using:

• Razor: Nickel-plated 1947 GEM Micromatic Flying Wing with the Guiding Eye
• Blade: GEM Stainless PTFE (4)
• Brush: Semogue Owner’s Club Mistura Taj (my favorite)
• Pre-shave: Proraso Rinfrescante
• Soap: Stirling Spice (excellent)
• Post shave: Thayer's Witch Hazel followed by 1965 Old Spice splash and Stirling Spice balm (superb)

I'm guessing at the number of uses on this blade because I don’t use my SE razors very often lately. I do love the Flying Wing though and wanted to give this particular one a try. I own four of them and two are NOS that have never been used. I find them to be very intuitive razors that nicely balance the aggressive nature of this blade format with a mild blade presentation.

The first pass WTG was quite comfortable, but not incredibly efficient. I don’t find these modern GEM SE blades to be as durable as most of the B&B brethren. I seem only to get two really good shaves from them before they start to feel a little inefficient and tuggy. The second pass ATG was also quite comfortable but left a decent amount of work for a third pass, especially on my neck. After three passes, I had very little, if any, irritation and no blood, but I only reached DFS+ in a couple isolated spots while getting BBS everywhere else. I’ll probably retire the blade. I’ve got 50 of them

Took ten days down with a trimmer before my shower to aid the Fatboy's path. Two passes multi directions. April fools was almost my wild card to try the Phoenix Ascension Twist Aluminum. Maybe it would work for adjustable April, but, not Vintage. Over all a nice shave. Noticed a few micro weepers after splash. Left them to their own devices.

Old Type and Stirling! Excellent.

The Old Type with a Wizamet combined to make a very efficient and smooth shave, BBS with no fuss. The Stirling badger performs way better than it's price tag would indicate.

This was an excellent shave with one of my favorite vintage razors. It's always a pleasure to use this one.

An excellent shave.

I shaved for a week with this Tuckaway and loved it. Now, just after its first use since replating, it shaves even better! Three cheers to Chris at Back Roads Gold for his exemplary work!

SE SOTD, Saturday, April 1st 2023


Razor : Ever-Ready, British 1912 model- Mfg 1936-53, tame mid range, excellent Mfg razor with excellent finish QC, this razor sold millions over the decades of production both in USA & Great Britain because it was just that good. Used a modern Gem SS PTFE blade and it works better than was offered back in the that era of shaving. Also used a RIGS shim to mimic the tilt of the older blades at that time period.
Blade : Gem Personna SS PTFE (3) very sharp, excellent longevity, smooths out nicely, predictable + safest blade to handle.
Soap : Gillette Pure cream, nice clean unique scent with excellent lather qualities. Makes excellent Ubber lather also.
Brush : Yaqi "Casino clubs" 26mm timer wolf knot, excellent lather generator, heavenly luxury cloud like soft tips, gentle splay scrubber + excellent lather painter. One of my favorite brushes to use.
Pre shave : (Dedicated Cashmere synthetic)Brush wash whole face with CeraVe hand bar cleanser with a dollop of clear Aloe Vera on the cleaned beard area.
Prep : Cold water rinse after each pass of 2 + pickups. WTG + ATG + pickups.
Post shave : Razorock Irish Countryside AS with witch hazel + a dollop of CeraVe moisturizing lotion(scentless).
Results : or CCS,DFS,BBS + no irritation + no weepers= Excellent stellar close shave this morning with my Ever-ready 1912 model with a coated Gem blade.(It don't get much better when shaving + no irritation!)
