VDH Luxury soap

i havent really gotten to really try this stuff out, i did Sat night, but holy crap :cursing: i tried a new Persona red and lets just say, it cut the living hell out of my face and i got razor burn on my neck :scared: . giving my neck another day to heal and then i'm gonna go at it again :biggrin1:

never have i gotten burned that bad, but i have been usually sticking to a feather or a Astra SP. could it also be that i tried my restored Redtip for the first time???? (this is off topic however)

anyways, i want to know how many other like the soap, compared to Col Konk bay rum or the likes? there is a Walgreens about 10 ish miles by me that carries it and i was pretty stoked. they even have the VDH lux brush and kit, however, they're really expensive!!!!! 24 for the brush and 34 for the kit (soap, mug, brush) i ended up buying a unscented and a scented puck

You violated one the big rules of wet shaving: don't change too many variables at once. Since you changed 3 variables all at the same time, you don't know which was at fault.

VDH Luxury is a great product, certainly better than regular VDH Deluxe, and most certainly superior to Col Conk. Col Conk, and VDH Deluxe are basically the same soap with different scents.

I doubt the soap was to blame, as it's a solid product; but it can take a few shaves to get optimal lather out of any product.

$34 is the usual retail price of the Luxury Kit by the way. That's the same cost it would be at Amazon too.

I've used VDH Luxury regularly for the past year or so (though now I just finished my first week of Tabac and won't be returning to the VDH anytime soon). It's a great soap. I would say it's the best soap you can buy for $5.00. But it took me a little while to get the hang of lathering it. I found that the initial swirl applied to my face was thin, then I would add a little more and transfer that to my face and it would start to thicken up. Then one more load of the brush and it exploded into a rich lather. It's great in the lubrication department, maybe not so great in the cushioning department.

And BTW, I also use Persona Reds, and aside from the occasional dud, I've found it to be a comfortable blade. Of course, YMMV.

yeah, i was kind of excited to try my red tip, as i had just finished polishing it up; figured i would put a new blade in it and i havent tried the reds at all yet. i didnt think the soap would have changed the variable by much, or if all, but i'll go backwards and try with my slim tomm morning.

Why not do a lather of the soap without shaving, at least you'll learn the correct ratio of water/soap to produce a lather with the slickness & consistency you normally use when shaving. Test the New Blade in the Razor that gives you consistently comfortable shaves and use your best blade in the restored Red-Tip, though not all during the same shave.

+1

Sounds like a great idea to me, don't endure two shaves worth of sub par lather, and the irritation, and cuts that would surely result. :thumbdown

So far I have been using VDH, I got the same luxury set as you did and it's actually a pretty good value at $35.00, if you price it all out separate, could be quite a bit more, also have VDH premium set, but it's in the dop for travel, I have no patience and the luxury set was a fast track to get me started right away, will start refining my stuff later, anyway, your on your way!

the soap wasn't the issue, i went back a step and shaved this morning with a astra SP that i was using already in the red-tip, it was the only variable i changed since saturday and i had no razor burn, no irritation, no nicks.

While I can use the Red IP's with no issue your face doesn't like them. Wait 6 months and try the Red IP's again and see if they work as your prefect your tech. Also try them in a differant Razor, Get a Shick Krona and it will tame any blade.

The luxury kit at Target is $20.

The one I was looking at said badger brush.

Hummm...there are packages at Target that say simply "brush" on the package instead of "badger brush", and they are clearly a dyed brush; they are dyed to look like a two band badger brush, which is a higher grade than pure badger. I wonder if some of the regular boxes containing the badger brush got mixed in by mistake.

If this is the red-tip from Gillette that razor was built to be aggressive for hard-to-shave beards. I have both a blue-tip (the milder version) and the red-tip and even though they look almost identical the blade spacing on the red version is wider and it is more aggressive. I find the red-tip even more aggressive than my favorite currently, the New (which is an aggressive open-comb razor from Gillette).
