Both are synthetic. One is cashmere and the other is probably close to a tuxedo (by my best guess). I'm partial to synthetic due to the low maintenance and no need to break them in.
I am a big fan of synthetics myself for those reasons. Usually synthetics splay really easy, but I guess some will have more or less backbone as well. It should not really be a break in period with synthetics though so what you experience now will most likely be the way it stays.

Note that my frame of reference is two synthetic brushes so it might be that I have no proper frame to compare. Either way it's a wonderful brush with very soft bristles which makes it perfect for face lathering!

Next new product was the dawn of glory preshave which really surprised me.
Soap TOBS cedarwood
Postshave Nivea sensitive balm
Razor r89 with Mühle blade (1)
Two passes wtg xtg resulting in a dfs with no blood or irritation

This preshave was a lot slicker compared to the proraso and cella. I'm genuinely surprised on just how much slicker it was. I like my proraso white but I love the new DoG. Between soaps I genuinely don't feel too much difference between the different products and I believe that currently the largest differences are most probably due to my lathering skills. So you can imagine my surprise when this new product differentiates itself so much.

A wonderful shave!

Today my new razor arrived. The Tatara Masamune Nodachi plus a separate Masamune plate ( in case a full Masamuneproved to be too aggressive)

I'll be completely honest. The first preshave impression was very mixed. The finish and machining is very impressive. The aesthetic is right up my alley. But then I screwed it apart and the super secured razor seemed so loose (about half a mm movement between the cap and plate) that I immediately reached out to rasoigoodfellas and tatara with a movie and the question of this was normal or if perhaps the cap was not manufactured according specifications.

While I'm still waiting for a reply from tatara rasoigoodfellas replied to let me know this is expected behaviour and that when the handle is screwed in, there would be no movement. And this is something that baffles me as to why you would design it this way.

This first impression did not prepare me for the absolute joy this razor was to shave with. Three passes with the third fully against the grain resulting in a solid dfs+ with no blood. Just as an experiment I used the alum block just to see if I didn't over do but no the feedback was really minimal.

I'm especially pleased with its performance against the grain where my Mühle razors struggled either feeling tuggy or in case of the r89 draw blood.

I'm really looking forward to getting to know this razor.

Preshave proraso white
Soap Nivea sensitive protect
Aftershave alum, Thayers coconut toner, and Nivea sensitive balm
Razor full Nodachi with shark super chrome (2)
Three passes and clean up resulting in near bbs. I missed two trouble spots in my neck. Dfs + bbs if not for the two missed spots. Three tiny weepers all gone after the use of alum. Only mild tightness around the nose.

The Nodachi is treating me really well. I only got those 3 weepers because I was chasing bbs. After three regular passes the bbs was too close to pass up.

I often read that technique is everything but I'd be very disingenuous if I put today's success solely on my technique. I do believe that the improved blade clamping provides an improved shave. Especially against the grain where my Mühle razors struggled.

Something I also didn't expect is how the increase of the weight would impact the shave. This combined with the balance point moved away from the head helps pressure control.

I'm really enjoying my new razor and I'm happy that with my current skill level I'm able to find the proper angle and pressure. I'm going to hold of on the Masamune plate for at least 1 week just to not introduce to many things at the time. The next thing I have in mind is trying out feather blades and see how that treats me.

In summary a wonderful shave with less injury than my zealous behaviour warranted resulting in one of the closest shave yet!

I see your point here in your statement and I agree especially when we are starting out. We will have razors that works better and give us a closer, better and smoother shaves than others. This certainly will be the true long term as well. However, as you gain experience and get 100's and even 1000's (not that I have that) shaves behind you, those differences will get smaller and smaller.

I do recognize that some razors will never work super great for us. I have those, but I think that has to do with the style of our shaving and also what fits our routine/face/skin etc. I have also returned to those razors that did not work in the beginning and I have found most of them be quite good and I no longer have any issues with them. Technique might not be everything, but it is up there in the very high percentage, I would say in importance. The moral of all this is: do not get rid of razors too quickly, do not write off razors too quickly.

I am very happy that you had a great shave. Sounds like things are going quite well.

Preshave proraso white
Soap TOBS cedarwood
After shave alum stone, Thayers coconut and Nivea balm
Razor Nodachi with shark super chrome 3rd use
Two passes wtg at resulting in dfs+ with three minor weepers and no irritation.

Today I payed additional attention to my growth map or more accurately I improved my mental map. This payed immediate dividend as my usual trouble spots are closer than usual.

I also tried the standard two pass shave first going with the grain and then against the grain and this was not really comfortable. I think for now I'm going to stick to wtg xtg or in case of more frequent shaving xtg atg for my two pass shaves. My current hypotheses is that my whiskers are a tad too hard to skip a reduction pass. I especially felt this on my chin and lips where the razor struggled a bit. It is also there that I got the three weepers.

All in all still a good shave. And we continue to learn!

Hello and a belated welcome to the Journals section

I am a fan of the Masamune myself. I bought a separate Nodachi plate and cap, but found full Nodachi to be a bit much for me! But Tatara is one of my favorite razor makers, along with Karve Shaving.

Looking forward to reading more,
Eric

Thank you for the warm welcome. Glad to see another fan.
The Nodachi is treating me just fine currently but I haven't tried it yet on a daily or bidaily tempo so I'll see if I'll need to use the masamune plate. Depending on how it goes I might buy the regular masamune cap.

Full cella extra bio with Thayers coconut toner and alum stone
Nodachi razor with father blade 1
Two passes wtg xtg resulting in a ccs/dfs shave two weepers and slight tightness.

I have the flu and in an effort to make myself feel better I thought a nice hot shower and relaxing shave would be nice.
It wasn't. During the first pass I got a weeper in the nek and during the second I got one on the chin. I did not start the third pass.
Not going to draw any conclusions from this shave as I'm pretty sure my technique wasn't the best.

You get better now! Lots of that stuff going around.

First off, thank you all for the well wishes. I'm now through the worst part of the flu.
Preshave proraso white
Soap Nivea sensitive protect
Aftershave alum Thayers coconut toner and Nivea sensitive balm
Tatara Masamune plate with Nodachi cap (henceforth Masadachi) with a father blade 2
Two passes wtg xtg resulting in a relaxing dfs with no irritation or weepers

I was annoyed with my stubble today so I decided to get a quick shave. Purposely limited myself to two passes to avoid injury. I'm not going to say anything yet about the new combination except that I liked it.

Nice relaxing shave today.

Full cella with Thayers coconut toner
Full Nodachi razor with a feather blade 3rd use
Two passes wtg xtg resulting is a really smooth dfs+ no irritation or blood

Today I wanted to really take my time. Go real slow paying 200 percent attentive to technique and my grain map. I made the lather extra wet so that it would not dry out mid shave. I have to say I'm completely blown away. The shave was exceptionally comfortable and resulted is a really smooth result. I could have gotten a third pass in and maybe have gotten an elusive bbs because this two pass shave really isn't far away from it.
On the other hand I'm really happy that I had to go look at my bread because who knows how that third pass could have gone (I could have very well gone zealous and injured myself).
This really brings the message home that you all have been saying from the start. Take your time and really mind your technique.

I still need to conquer a spot next to my larynx where the hair grows south east to north west in a three way valley. It really is a bloody difficult spot to shave...

Anyhow. A wonderful shave. I will try to take more time in the future. It really pays off.

Merry Christmas all!
Today's shave is glorious!
Preshave dawn of glory
Soap GFS re nero
After shave alum followed by re nero after shave without alcohol
Razor Masadachi with shark super chrome 1
Three pass plus clean up resulting in a near BBS with a little tightness, no blood and no irritation

After last shave I decided to really go for a BBS. I took all the time in the world ( I think close to an hour) paying attention to pressure and angle.

The shave started on the backfoot as I had underhydrated the lather. I had to add additional water between the second and third pass. I also have room to improve my angle.
I'm especially happy I was able to feel these observations during the shave allowing me to coarse correct during the shave.

All this cumulated in a face that feels like a marble statue (minus a couple spots).
I'm especially pleased with the lack of irritation which I did prepare myself for as I did a fair share of buffering.

In conclusion a very merry shave!

Hi all

I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and is able to look forward to happy new year!
Today's post will serve two purposes. First I'd like to share the Christmas gifts I've received. After I will share the shave of the day.
I was lucky to receive a shave kit from Clinique and the OneBlade razor from my wife. I'm unfamiliar with Clinique and haven't seen much about it on B&B with exception of one praising thread on the aftershave. I'm very much looking forward to share with you my experience with these products.

As for my shave today, I had to hold myself back and not just try everything in the picture above. However common sense prevailed and I deceded to only use the razor today and use more familiar products for the other parts.

Therefore I used my familiar Cella Extra Bio products with the aforementioned oneblade. Three classic passes and the result was an unfair near BBS. I missed two of my trouble spots and for some reason half of my chin.🤷‍♂️ I am conviced I could have gotten a perfect BBS if I had properly checked everything.

If result was everything I would stick to the OneBlade. I did some really silly things that would have ended in a bloodbath had I done it with a Mühle or Tatara yet no irritiation and no nicks dispite a pimple on my chin (the part that is BBS). I could recommend this razor easily to any of my friends and family that are using cartridges and be conviced they'd be better off. In contrary my Tatara or Mühle razors I'd only pitch in case the person would be interested in traditional wetshaving.

This does not mean I will abandon my tatara DE razor. In my mind I now have a razor for when I have to shave or am lacking time and a razor for when I can really spend the time on the art.

The one big advantage for the OneBlade over my Tatara is the smoothness atg on the lips. I'm conviced this is due the thicker blade preventing flexing of the blade making all kinds of damage. Does anyone know of thicker DE blades? Ones that are less likely to chatter?

So in summary, it was a really good and low effort shave with a very smartly designed razor. I know the OneBlade is a bit controversial in this community but I really like it for the tool it is.

That is some nice gifts there. I know of no de blades that are thick enough to make a difference. Some that like thicker blades will use SE razors like AC blade format or GEM based. I have tried neither so I cannot speak for them.
