What's new

Using both 74 Persona Tungsten Steel and Schick Platinum Plus Titanium blades.

For the past 3 weeks I have been using a 74 Personna blade in my Gillette Knack razor. Last week my Schick Krona Razor was delivered so I pulled out the vintage Schick Platinum Plus Titanium blades. The Schick was a little rough on its first outing, but since then it has really smoothed out and showing no signs of deteriorating and the same with the 74 Personna. I have had at least 5 shaves with the Schick blade and more than 10 with the 74 Personna and they are both still going strong.

The problem is that the 74's appear to be made out of unobtanium. At least for the past several decades.... I wish someone in China would cheaply mass produce them again, just to throw a wrench into the carefully controlled DE razor blade market plan.... I can dream, can't I?

Trust me Jim, the vast majority of 'Chinese' DE blades I have tried are simply horrible.

P74's were a Tungsten blade, definitely not Unobtainium. They are a popular blade, although they are becoming rarer there are still some to be found. The demand for them means that prices are high.

As for the OP, I just got my 60-odd Schick Plus Platinum blades yesterday and will load up my very clean new Gold Krona with one in the morning.

With a 1976-vintage Spoiler, I got 12 shaves. I swapped in a Cardboard-pack PermaSharp Super and the Spoiler was smoother on the 12th shave than the Permasharp.

I've turned into a vintage blade nazi now.

Well, I got 13 shaves out of the 74 Personna and right now I am on shave 7 with the Schick Platinum Plus with Teflon coating. Now, keep in mind a I have very coarse beard and usually I do not push any blade past 4 shaves as most times tugging starts to be an issue at that 4th shave. Both the 74 and Schick provide great shaves easily passing by 4th shave stopping point.

Um, I think Jim knew that. "Unobtanium" means you can't get them now.

6 years later...
... I often saw that the Schick Plus Platinum DEs were mentioned as the Runner Up in the “Greatest Blades Of All Time” discussions alongside the Gillette Swedes whilst the Light Brigades and P74s were always out in first place.

We also all know that YMMV and blade performance depends on the individual’s skin chemistry and water quality as well as the manufacturing standards of the blade.
Even so I was VERY SURPRISED that for me a Schick Plus Platinum performed even better on its first shave than a Light Brigade or a P74.
I find the P74s incredibly incredibly sharp and the Light Brigades slightly smoother but marginally less sharp (though still way ahead of anything else I know!)

But the Schick Plus Platinum on it’s first shave was for me even sharper and smoother (wow!)
On 48hrs growth I had that fabled experience of not actually being able to feel that the blade was in the razor and the hairs just magically being wiped away.

Having been blown away by the P74s and Light Brigades I was astonished to find a blade which performed better for me.
YMMV of course... and the longevity of the blade is yet to be determined
