What's new

To Open Comb of Not to Open Comb.

I've started to think about trying an Open Comb. Looking at cadets for the price. What are your suggestions in the sub 30 dollar range? Vintage or new are both acceptable.

Yes. :yesnod:

Vintage wise, I think you should check out a Gillette NEW. They are relatively common and will be a good starting point.

Probably my favorite modern production open comb razor is the Fatip, which is a bit more on the aggressive side.

I agree with this. I have a bar handle short comb new and love it . It's my first OC but it won't be my last. I'm also looking at the fatip grande.

Merkur 15c open comb is pretty mild (its the one I use in the shower when I'm running late). Love my Merkure 11c but they are getting extremely scarce. I hear that the Gillette NEW OC is good and plan on adding one to my collection. One warning - once you get used to open comb razors its hard to go back to bar razors. At least that seems to be the case with alot of us.

Merkur Open Comb, any of the models, if you want a really mild OC to start.
Cadet/RazoRock if you want a new medium aggressive OC for a good price
Gillette NEW, New Improved, Tuckaway if you want vintage medium aggressive

I don't know that I'd recommend anything more aggressive than that until you've really gotten comfortable with a medium sort of one.

The Cadet TP-26 is rather mild for an open comb. Phil has them in stock. I ended up taking the handle from one and mating it to my R41 and have been happy ever since. I gave the TP-26 head with my R101 handle to my brother-inlaw and it is his daily shaver. For under $30 IMO it is a nice razor with a good weighted handle.

there are quite a few to choose from going from mild to off the chart blade on a stick.

What are you looking for? Something with more blade exposure? Something that looks cool?

An idea of what you want to end up with as far as the type of shave would be helpful to get meaningful recommendations.

Even saying something like "I use this razor but want something that is more like that" would be helpful so that we to know what to recommend to you otherwise you get more "Gee I have this razor" or "Gee I like that razor" type of answers which are not going to help you at all.

I don't have the most experience, but I have experienced a Gillette NEW short comb and a Pearl SSH-01 (same as Razorock Little Bastone). The Pearl has looser tolerances and therefore isn't as pleasureable to use. I prefer the Gillette that i got for $15 off the auction site.

I've been using '40 SS and recently started using a Slim on 6 usually with either a wilkinson or a feather. I have a coarse fast growing beard and sensitive skin. Thinking something on the aggressive side. Mild razors such a my tech give me horrible irritation no matter what blade I use.
