Help open comb recommendations

Good morining fellas! I've been out of this hobby for years now, and I come back to a much different landscape. Many of my favorite vendors are gone! I was looking in to buying a Portland Razor Kraken and turns out, they no longer exist! Same with above the tie!! Sad days indeed.

I recall I really like the Gillet New (Open Comb) and would like to find another one or a new SS version? Restored, new, or like new. Anyone here recommend a place to look for this?

Welcome back!

There are too many open comb safety razors around these days to lob one out as a general suggestion (other than the nickel-plated Fatip Grande, of course), but maybe you’re looking for the compliment to your Gillette New? The Etsy store for Back Roads Gold has two gold-plated New Short Comb razors and one nickel-plated New Long Comb razor in stock as I type (can’t vouch for after I post this).

Lots of great open comb razors from Canada, China, Greece, Poland, Portugal, and the USA these days, too. Probably others, too.

Anything you’d recommend in Stainless? Above the tie quality?

The Blackland Blackbird with an OC plate in stainless is very good. People with more experience can say how it stacks up to Above The Tie’s H2 in performance, but the quality is very much there.

Mühle now sells a stainless version of their R41, but it’s not really an open comb so much as a sharply bumpy safety bar.

I’m kind of fond of RazoRock’s Game Changer JAWS 0.84 because it has Wallace and Gromit teeth, but I’ve read the open comb version of their stainless Lupo razors in 0.72 and 0.95 are more efficient.

For vintage, I'd suggest a Gillette New replated. My New SC is replated in nickel. It looks and shaves like a brand new razor but was made in the 1930s. It will last indefinitely if taken care of. Chris at Back Roads Gold does a great job.

For something brand new, I'd suggest a Fatip Grande OC in nickel or chrome. This is a solid brass razor made just like the great vintage ones. Cost around $25-30, IIRC.

Plated brass is a great choice for material. You could get stainless, but it is extra expense and not necessary.

You just need to be "OPEN" to, buying and trying a few....
Lots of great choices out there...
Jump in, the water is fine...
