What's new

Time to brag!

This afternoon at 3:45 my son, Patrick, signs his Letter of Intent with the University of New Orleans swim team. He had been contacted by several schools and had narrowed it down and only visited two based upon the specialized degree program he is pursuing, Film Study. To say the least, we are overjoyed that the best opportunity happened to be with an in-state school.

Eight long years of work finally paid off for him. Can you tell I'm a proud Daddy?

Congratulations to that fine young man, and to you as well. Clearly you have done an excellent job as a father!

Congratulations to you and your family. So, for his accomplishments, I assume he will receiving your finest, most valued gillette razor?

Maybe when he actually works up enough to shave regularly.

Although, as a swimmer he does shave his entire body before the final championship meet every season. Not only does this reduce the friction of body hair, but it also removes the outer layer of skin leaving a very aerodynamic surface. It is also a psychological lift that all swimmers employ.

Congratulations to you and your son. That's an incredible accomplishment! And I say this from experience, as you might guess looking at my avatar. The full-body shave never seemed necessary to me, but then again, I didn't swim in NCAA Div. 1. Maybe it would have if that'd happened. I had other priorities in college. Anyway, I wax nostalgic. Congratulations again.

Yup. I noticed your avatar right away. Those type of things jump out at me. As a former swimmer you may appreciate this:

This is a big event from Patrick's state championship meet this past March.

The event you are about to watch, the 200 Freestyle, is the final event Patrick had remaining. He had already won the 1000 free, 500 free and 400 IM and had 2nd's in the 100 free and 200 IM. His other individual event was a 4th in the 100 breaststroke. Another swimmer, which you'll see wearing a Superman type t-shirt after the race, had already finished all seven of his events and had four 1st's, two 3rd's and a 4th. If Patrick wins this event he earns high-point honors (basically the over-all Louisiana state championship). If he fails to win the other guy wins it all.

Patrick is the swimmer wearing the white cap and kneeling at the beginning of the video. The swimmer to his left, Christian Riess, came into this meet as the #1 seed with the fastest time in the state. Patrick earned the #1 seed for this final in the morning prelims and Riess had the second fastest prelim time. The swimmer up in lane two, two lanes to Patrick's right, had the #2 fastest time in the state coming into the meet.

Short Course swimming is in a 25 yard pool, therefore, 200 yards is eight lengths of the pool or up and back four times. This will give you an idea of the status of the race as it's going on.

The video is fairly short (4:10) with less than 1:45 of that being the actual swim.

Patrick's 200 Free

So ... which four years in between grades one and twelve did he slack off? :001_rolle

Nah, congratulations!

LOL. Yup. It almost seems like that. We have been devoted to supporting him for years. It seems like it's all we have done. But, it has been a labor of love. And we've managed to keep right up with his brother's baseball and football and now possibly soccer. He waits 15 years to decide to play soccer so he can keep in better shape for football season.

That is fantastic. Congrats Sir. You have every right to be proud.

Report card day here. well I wont be sharing my sons lack of accomplishments.

Congratulations! Thanks for sharing your joy with us. I look forward to seeing some meet results next year!

Congrats! What was your son's time? And do you think he'd consider swimming open water?

He does train distance, but he was recruited as a middle distance specialist. His best times are all last season when he was 16. He should easily improve this Winter and Spring:

100 Yard Free: 48.11
200 Yard Free: 1:44.99
500 Yard Free: 4:41.52

Asylum I know nothing about swimming so bear with me. Does you son have to train differently on a 25 yard pool compared to a 50 yard? What length will the pool be in college? BTW, great video. I found myself cheering him on.
