What's new

Time for me to try a single edge.

Have been unisg a double edge for a year and half, and want to try a single edge. Hated the injector. Where do I need to start!!

Another vote for the 1912 or the gem jr.

Im jumping straight in with the micromatic as i don't value my life.

1912's are great and are easy to find. The Gem Featherweight and G-Bar are also great. Featherweights are extremely cheap and easy to score on eBay. The Ted Pella PTFE coated blades are very good and the easy to find (Walgreens, etc.) GEM stainless blades are very usable. My personal favorite blade is the carbon steel Gem Blue Star, although the carbon steel blades generally seem to work very well for some (e.g. me) but be thoroughly hated by others. I started with DE's, but now enjoy the SE's more and get more consistent shaves from them. Enjoy!

Another plug for the Gem 1912. EverReady 1912 and Star 1912 would be the same thing. If you're in the US, then Gem Personna blades at Walgreens would be the best to start with.

I've got a GEM Junior that I need to finish polishing up. It's in shaveable condition right now and it delivers a very smooth shave. I like it and would recommend it.

Either the 1912 patent American Safey Razor (doesn't matter which tradename; Gem, Ever-Ready or Star), or the 1900/1901 patent Gem Jr. Bar Razor.

My personal preference is the Gem Jr. Bar, but the 1912's are much easier to find and will most likely be cheaper to aquire. The 1912 in my view, runs a very close second to the Gem Jr. Bar Razor in providing the best and most comfortable shave to be had with any safety razor.

Regards,
Tom

I have been using my Grandpa's Butterscotch Gem SE using Carbon Gem Blue Star Blades.

This one is white

Where is the best place to get a 1912? how much would one cost?

Don't forget to look for a Gem Junior, too, which is a 1912 style head under a different name.

My cheapest 1912 was part of a lot of 3 Gems, along with a Featherweight and Micromatic, $11.09 shipped from an eBay seller. You should be able to get one for under $10 shipped, maybe a little more if you want one that's shiny and new looking, and/or comes in an original case. That's eBay prices, these also show up on B/S/T from time to time.

You may find one at an antique store or flea market for even less, if you have the patience to make the rounds.

yes, the 1912's are great, but the featherweight may be just as good for an s.e. newcomer. in any case, you'll be excited when you see the shaves you're gonna get. g'luck

+1 on the 1912 to start, but don't fear the OC Micromatic. The best shaves i've ever had came from the snaggle-toothed, face-eating monstrosity. G-bars are nice too :thumbup1:
