Do You Favor Single Edge Over Double Edge Razors?

Here's the New Kid In Town ... a Parker SoloEdge.
I'll kick the tires and light the fire on it tomorrow morning. I'm going to start off with a Parker blade, against my better judgment. I probably should eliminate any variables and stick with a Perma-Sharp or Shark Super Stainless that I usually use in my SE razors. But I'll give it a whirl and see what I think.

I'm liking the SoleEdge but it may take a few trials to get the hang of it. The Parker blades are probably made by Lord since they are made in Egypt.

I'd use the Perma-Sharp half blades at first if you are used to them. They work very well and that would be one less variable for you to deal with.

Technique hint: the SoloEdge if hefty at ~92g and a lot of that weight is in the handle. If you choke up on the handle, rest the handle end in your palm, you will have better control over the razor. For ATG, you can put a finger or two behind the razor head and directly steer it for very fine control. You don't need a lot of pressure, this thing has some weight to it.

Thanks.
I think you're right. I think I'll switch to the Perma-Sharp to eliminate a variable.
'Preciate the heads up. Hopefully, I'll like it. The learning curve is usually pretty quick for me.

Sort of half by accident, I find myself rotating between double edge and single edge every other day. I now have four main modern double edge razors (Game Changer, Rockwell 6C and two Edwin Jagger DE89's) and four single edges (Leaf Twig & Thorn, Yaqi Tachi and Parker SoloEdge), so it kind of makes sense. It adds a nice variety to my shaves. :smile1:

I neglected to include the Pearl Flexi. So the ratio is 5:4 for double edge/single edge.
I have a few more modern double edge razors as well as 6 vintage Gillettes but these are the razors I use in rotation most often.

So called "SE's" that use 1/2 blade of a DE or just have one edge of the blade exposed are in my mind "so called". I say that because true SE formats like those that use Gem, Injector, AC type blades are much thicker blades than any DE blade and that in and of itself creates a different shave experience.

I suggest picking up something in the Injector format be it used Schick or new Supply.

I've considered it and have no doubt injectors provide great shaves. I have hesitated to jump down that rabbit hole because I already have over 900 DE/SE blades at my disposal and don't want to spend more on proprietary injector blades.
At least not yet. :lol1:

Agree with you. Someone could just use one side of the blade in a Super-Speed and call that “single edge” shaving but it’s not.

Understood. Used Injectors are cheap and one pack of blades will set you back $5 or $10 and give you at least 50 great shaves, probably closer to 100.

There are a lot more great blade and razor designs with DE.

The best format for a safety razor, ignoring cost, is the injector blade, but it only has a handful of designs.

I like variety.

If Blackland did what they did in the Blackbird with and injector blade it could be my favorite.

I've only been using SE for about 6-8 weeks, so it's probably too soon to tell, but I really like them. My Wolfman DE is a guaranteed BBS, but there is something very appealing about the SE razors. I started with the Alpha Spirit and it is a wonderful shaver. I need the sharper Kai Captain for that one, but I think it's really a great shaver. I recently purchased the LaFaulx++ for a little more aggressive take - and it is. It's not quite as comfortable to use as the Spirit, but it mows down those thick chin hairs with more ease. I guess having purchased two razors in a short time span says something.
