Tim Hortons Hits New York City

In today’s New York Times is a story on Tim Hortons replacing numerous Dunkin Donuts in NYC. Was never a fan of DD, if fact think their coffee is awful (just my take, I prefer strong full bodied coffee. )
For my B&B friend north of the US border, is TH just another DD? or better. One is opening near the New York Stock Exchange, a few blocks from my office.

i have heard that tim horton's is awesome.

the dukin doughnuts doughnuts suck. they seem to be getting smaller and consist mainly of air.

TH is, IMHO, a far sight better than DD. They're actually in many parts of the US at this point (the Ohio invasion began long ago). Oddly enough, I saw one on a recent trip to Dublin, as well (Ireland, not Ohio -- though there's one there, too ). FYI, TH and Wendy's are under the same ownership.

Dunkin Donuts came here to Belfast about 7-8 years ago. I thought they wer good, decent coffee, great sandwiches and well priced, then after a few years they completely disappeared.

Recently Tim Horton stands have been appearing as concessions in supermarkets, convenience stores and suchlike. Have not seen one as a seperate cafe in its own right. Loved Hortons (coffee, donuts and sandwiches) when I went to Canada but it looks overpriced here.

Yeah, and McDonalds had a Moscow branch about 10 years before they came to Norn Iron. Though I don't really like Mcd's (or Starbucks).

I'll take Tim Hortons' coffee over Dunkin Donuts' any day of the week, especially their iced coffee. I'm not a donut eater so I can't comment there. The Maine invasion began several years ago and has been pretty successful.

Yeah you guys are behind the times. TH invaded the Midwest quite awhile ago.

Tim Hortons is the Canadian Dunkin Donuts. They are as common in in Canada as DD is in the U.S. I am not a big fan of DD but Tim Hortons is disgusting. My wife and I spent last week driving around Canada. Note: She was unaware I trying to acquire as many Proraso products as possible from the local drugstores. Anyways, based on previous experience, we were determined not to drink coffee from TH and succeeded in not having a single cup from TH all week. I do not understand the appeal of TH.

A positive note about TH is that if you must go they do have a pretty good sour cream donut which is a personal weakness of mine.

Permit me to respectfully dissent. Tim Horton may have been a decent hockey player, but his coffee SUCKS. It's like brown water with no flavor, at least at the THs I've been to here in Michigan and in Ontario. The DD coffee around here is actually really good, IMHO. In fact I had a cup this morning on the way in to work. I like richer, stronger coffee, not warm, brown water. Maybe DD brews it differently in different parts of the country. I had a DD coffee in NYC last year (Lex. Ave near 91st St.) and it tasted weaker to me. Go figure....

TH is way better than DD, I love their french vanilla , cheese croissant and their sandwiches ... way to go NY :thumbup1:

TH rocks - I've been waiting for them to come to the NYC metro area for years. I heard that Wendy's bought them a few years back so I was hoping that they would start making inroads into the US. Dunkin Donuts used to be good years ago when they actually made the donuts at the restaurants, now they use the spoke and wheel distribution method where all the product is made at a central location and shipped out via trucks. Their donuts have become smaller and no longer have much taste, and I hate it when the chocolate glaze constantly slips right off my Boston Cream donut - it's not even worth going there anymore, it's better and cheaper to buy from the guys on the corner in NYC with the silver paneled trailers.

To think that way back when each Kentucky Fried Chicken would bread, batter, and fry fresh chickens each day. Now everything comes in on a palette, frozen, and is either grilled or microwaved. I've heard that the big restaurants like Chili's, etc. don't even have ovens or stoves anymore - everything either gets grilled or goes in the microwave. To think how far we've sunk - it's not even worth eating out anymore.

Anyway, look forward to having Tim Horton's in NYC - Toujours Frais!

Being a former Canadian, I can attest that TH is a religion up there. If NY picks it up like Canada did it'll be insane.. Buy some Tim's stock now :)

You can never tell the taste of New Yorkers, Crispy Creme opened a few stores a few years ago and were a hit for about two weeks. Now they are all closed.

I prefer the food at TH to just about any of the comparable chains. If Tim's ever makes it to the south and southwest it could be a bloodbath. That said, I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't comment there.

Timmies is everywhere up here. DD is pretty scarse, and I must admit not having tried DD ecept for about once maybe ten years ago. The early morning lineups at the Timmies drive-through can be insane, and pedestrian customers can be lined up out the door (which shows some dedication in a Canadian winter.)

The coffee is a decent cuppa joe. It's NOT to be compared to an elite coffee house where actual CARE is taken in selecting and properly roasting the best beans. If you are looking for gourmet coffee, keep walking. If you are looking for somewhere to get a half-decent caffine fix, Timmies is as good a place as you will find.

The same can be said for their doughnuts. They are good for what they are. They will not beat the extra-ordinary baker who does his own from scratch right there, but for a fast food outlet, they are good.

Their attempts at "real food" are hit and miss ... mostly miss.

... eh.

Tim hortons is canadian religion,

their coffee is decent, but their soups, honey cruler donuts, and their Turkey bacon clubs are awesome :)

their sausage and egg bisquite things are awesome too,

great place,

Tim Hortons is a staple food, at least in Toronto. Every location seems like a license to print money. One thing I loved about the timmy ho's in downtown Toronto is that you would see all types of people in there - homeless people, eastern european construction workers, police officers, lawyers, college students, families, old couples. I could not narrow down what a specific timmy's customer would be like for you other than 'a human being, who is currently alive'

Licence to print money? It sure looks that way!

Just about the only two specific demographics that don't go to Timmies is:
1. the guys who frequent the Cafe""""" and are hooked on the really good stuff, and
2. young quasi-artistic-types who think that Timmies is way too uncool so they go to Starbucks or Second Cup instead for the honour of overpaying for lesser product in a funker environment.
