What's new

Things besides shaving that you do in an "old school" manner?

Read a newspaper instead of watching the news on TV or online.

Use a 35mm film camera and develop/print everything myself.

Listen to classical music.

Listen to real CD's which I bought myself.

Brew tea from loose leaves.

Use my cell phone exclusively as a telephone and only call people if I have actually something to discuss. I do not call people to pass time at a bus stop.

Listen to classical and jazz music on vinyl records played on a stereo system consisting of separate components.

Use tube electronics (guitar amp and home stereo).

Play golf with forged blades.

Play tennis with natural gut strings.

Serve and volley.

Drive a manual transmission automobile.

Play guitar and sing in a Grateful Dead cover band. (Does that count?)

Look people in the eye when I speak to them.

Wear shoes with leather soles.

Read books printed on paper.

Wear a mechanical movement watch. (I know that's popular again).

I use a soda siphon and syrups to make soda "pop".

I listen to college sports and old-time radio programs on an old, wooden cabinet AM radio.

I prefer to heat my house with a fire in the wood stove instead of the forced air system.

I wave to passers by and other drivers when driving through my neighborhood.

I hold the door for and say hello to others, male or female.

I'm a fairly heavy smoker. Cigars, Pipes, and handmade cigarettes. When i light whatever it is I'm about to smoke, i prefer matches.

I also use some "old school" slang. For example i often say "cheers" in place of goodbye.

Speaking of "cheers" i love to give real toasts when its appropriate. like "may the wind be at your back and the sun on your face..." or "may the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past." or when if the party gets a little out of hand i'll toast "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti."

Wear a watch that doesn't use a battery

Live in the city

Read the NYT and one of the Chicago papers (i.e. non-electronically) every morning over coffee

Indulge in the occasional 3 martini lunch

Collect original mid century airline posters (mostly David Klein's work for TWA with some Pan Am, American and United mixed in)

Live in a building that was built in 1910 filled with furniture that was built or inspired by American mid-century

Use good kitchen cutlery in place of a food processor, garlic press etc.

Buy my meat from a butcher and my seafood from a fishmonger

I say "Please" and "Thank You" when receiving services from people. Also, "Excuse Me Sir or Ma'am." Manners seem to be out of style these days. I also wear a mechanical watch, shine my boots with a horsehair brush, soft cloth, and elbow grease, and I drive a 6-speed. Which I enjoy. Greatly.

Fan of Frank and his vocal likes

do "old school" weightlifting (dead, squat, etc.) vice machines and Men's Health routines

I tip my hat to you Sir! There aren't enough of us left! I once drove a man over 50 miles from Arizona to Boulder City Nevada so he could purchase a new battery for his RV and then the 50+ back into Arizona. After I installed the new battery for him, he tried to pay me. I just smiled and said drive safe.
