What's new

Things besides shaving that you do in an "old school" manner?

I've been here for a little over a week, and I got to wondering...for people do DE or Straight Razor shaving, do you do anything else in an "old school" manner, or a way that isn't as widely used today? The reason doesn't really matter, it could be for a better result, or due to tradition.

I use UNIX based operating systems.

I listen to opera.

I hate reading any document longer than a page online. Dead treeware for me!

I walk through museums without headphones on :001_rolle

Hrmm. I'll think of something.

Write with fountain pens, almost exclusively (and collect and restore them too)

Keep a journal

Keep my religious and political beliefs mostly to myself

Carry around my own pen. Black ink ultra fine tip.
Carry a watch. Some days a wrist watch other days a pocket watch.
Use my car's turn signals before making a turn. Even in a parking lot.
The yellow light on a street light means caution, light is changing. NOT speed up.
I don't bother with audio blogs. Since I can read significantly faster then someone can speak the same words.

I use the bell sound of a rotary phone as the ring-tone on my cell. I wish I could get the numbers to go click-click-click when I punch them in, but haven't found that particular file yet.

I went and bought (out of my own funds) leather gloves for work, even though the company provides us with plastic ones. I like the feel of leather against my skin, and it gives me a better grip and more dexterity than any artificial materials I've tried. Besides, leather is the only material that actually protects my hands ... even wearing the plastic ones, my skin would get seriously chapped and incredibly dirty.

I like to wear a tie when I go out to a night on the town ... I'm just about the only one there that does so, and people that don't know my name sometimes refer to me as "That Tie Guy."

I do my laundry by hand in the bathtub ... although time consuming and labor-intensive, it is very cost-effective and energy efficient. Best of all, it sure beats having to schlep my clothes to the laundromat. This my washer, and this is my dryer. I hang my clothes on a fold-up stand to give them the final air-dry.

Listen to opera
Smoke a pipe
Wear French cuffs

Drive a standard.

Wear cuff links whenever possible.

Treat women like women, elders with respect and everyone (mostly, I am only human) with courtesy.

Refrain from profanity and slang.

Read books.

- I too like cuff links and dressing with class. There is a time and place for jeans and a T-shirt, but there is also time to step it up.
- I treat all women like I would a member of my family, with dignity and respect. I open doors, pull out chairs and stand when a woman enters/exits the room, dinner table etc.
- I'm a huge Sinatra fan and given the option would choose Frank over anything from my era.
- I'm a library nut and prefer to research history when possible the old fashioned way, in print!
- I'm learning to play the guitar
- I shine my shoes
- Work on my own cars, guns, appliances etc. (I basically fix everything around the house).
- Asked my wife's parents permission to date and permission to marry.

-I play guitar instead of guitar hero.

-Ironically, I carry a knife instead of using my teeth... and it's old school.

-I wear/take care of leather boots instead of running shoes.

-I light my fires without fire.

-I hate cellphones and digicams.

- But I can't live without the Internet and keep informed about new technologies. Some thing are better old fashionned, some other evolved well. I like that I chose what I want to be done old school and what I want modern. I made a movie recently, with mini-dv and computers, and it was way easier than with a VHS editing setup like I did 8 years ago.
