Thiers Issard Egyptian

Whilst looking through the reviews the other day I noticed a reference to a TI "Egyptian", though no full review. So I searched it here in this forum and found info to be thin at best, although most comments were extremely favorable and since I have a newfound interest(obsession) in straights I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on it and perhaps provide pics?

Don't do this to yourself, Grant!

The razor was one of TI's limited run razors and has not been available for some time at retail. There was a rescaled one listed on ebay two or three weeks ago, but I lost track and can't say what it sold for.

Someone that has one will chime in and extol it's virtues just to torment those of us that don't own one.

Link to the review? I wonder if this is a reference to the Bijou de France razors with the forged designs on the spine? If so, yea, they are good shaving razors (you can see a similar one here). Fit and finish on mine (Tudor Rose) isn't the best, but it is a TI.

Likewise i have a 5/8" flying tudor rose and she's lovely very sharp and very smooth certainly one of my best razors, i've heard good things about ti egyptian razors.

Could try firing martin at rasurpur an email im sure he sold them at one time.

Very close, Henry. I belive the Egyptian had a different spine decoration and they were all scaled in the same wood, the type of wood has gone fugitive however.

Perhaps Snakewood? They also had models with vintage scales that had inlays too - one with a dragon, another with flowers and a third I can't recall.

The origins of the Bijou de France razors are a little turgid. I've seen it advertised that some, those with the Tudor Rose spine, were made from vintage blanks. Other spine decorations were not similarly advertised. Hopefully, someone will chime in with the whole story.

Oh dear God I think I am doing this to myself!!! Can therapy help SRAD? No very stupid question therapy wastes money and time that quite clearly needs to be devoted to shaving.

You B******* for posting that infernal link :cursing:. I want one, really really really bad it's got engraving on and everything and that makes it more tempting than an ice cream with sprinkles ( yes that tempting)

:001_tt2: The only thing that can cure SRAD is giving into it. Resistance is futile.

They're really outstanding razors. The spine was worked in an egyptian motif, and the scales were palmwood. My wife bought me one for an anniversary present about four years ago, just in time, for the supply dried up shortly thereafter.

Every one I've ever seen had a bend where the blade meets the shank. Bill Ellis used to straighten them out for people, though I kept mine stock. But except for that one flaw they are really lovely looking razors, and really outstanding shavers, even by TI standards.

Thiers Issard Egyptian Ohhh man, that is one on my must buy if I ever see one list (assuming that I have enough money at the time)

I have a Thiers Issard flying tudor rose Bijou de France razor with snakewood scales and it is a very nice shaver. That is the most I have spent on a razor but I am glad I bought it.

Ohhh dear ohh dear oh dear it seems like I should be prepping the wallet for an incoming Egyptian, how rare or otherwise are they to see for sale?

They're not commonly seen for sale, but that's at least partly because there are so very few of them, and they haven't been available at retail since late 2006 so by now they've found pretty permanent homes. I don't know how many TI made but I suspect it was well under a hundred. They are much less common than the Pierre Thiers Limited Edition razor (TIPTLE). The Egyptian Palmwood razors sold out in a bit over a year whereas the TIPTLE (with ~400 made) is still available at retail even after five years. I prefer using my TIPTLE to my EP, but that's because the TIPTLE is more "interesting" to use; objectively my EP is actually a somewhat better shaver. IIRC this was pretty much the concensus opinion back then too.

Unfortunately this isn't a good razor to get RAD over. I'd recommend getting RAD over something like the Bergischer Lowe or Prima Klang or TI 5/8 Damascus, or even scrounging up a TIPTLE, which I've heard is still available over the web from some shop in France.

Thanks for the advice but aren't TI Damascus poorly though of for the price against say a Tim Zowada or RW?

Yes, but that is a different razor than the TIPTLE.

Someone needs to put a guide to TI historic/limited edition razors together.
