I recently sat and honed all my razors with the thought of having them all at the same baseline from my honing. I set the bevel using my Norton 4k, then move to the 8k, and finish with my yellow coticule.
I can first say that there is a noticeable difference (at least I noticed) between a sharp razor and a very sharp razor, and I found that a very sharp Square or Spike is absolutely unforgiving as I have been walking around with a gouge of skin out of my jaw-line for the last few days.
Part of me started thinking that a Round point is the way to go, but then I realized its not the point itself, but the handler that was the issue. I tried to do a mixed ATG/XTG pass and that was when I cut myself with the point I wasnt paying as much attention as I should have.
I was also thinking that I changed from using MWF to Pre de Provence on that shave too, so maybe the different soap had an impact too. It seems the PdP and its Shea Butter base has an increased glide factor and that reduced drag may have also been a contributing factor.
So I also decided that if I am going to use a freshly honed razor, do not change my setup until I have tested the performance of the razor. Too many variables make it harder to identify what may have gone wrong.
