Spike or Square Point… ouch

I recently sat and honed all my razors with the thought of having them all at the same baseline from my honing. I set the bevel using my Norton 4k, then move to the 8k, and finish with my yellow coticule.

I can first say that there is a noticeable difference (at least I noticed) between a sharp razor and a very sharp razor, and I found that a very sharp Square or Spike is absolutely unforgiving as I have been walking around with a gouge of skin out of my jaw-line for the last few days.

Part of me started thinking that a Round point is the way to go, but then I realized it’s not the point itself, but the handler that was the issue. I tried to do a mixed ATG/XTG pass and that was when I cut myself with the point… I wasn’t paying as much attention as I should have.

I was also thinking that I changed from using MWF to Pre de Provence on that shave too, so maybe the different soap had an impact too. It seems the PdP and its Shea Butter base has an increased glide factor and that reduced drag may have also been a contributing factor.

So I also decided that if I am going to use a freshly honed razor, do not change my setup until I have tested the performance of the razor. Too many variables make it harder to identify what may have gone wrong.

I got a pretty nifty cut from my spike point at my cheek bone. You just have to explore which angles work, even if you learn the hard way.

Square point sliced the hell outta my ear lobe this am. I was paying attention. Rookie error. Still hurts.

Yup a spike/square will jump out and bite you. If I get any nick from it it is on my lower neck when I slice.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the accuracy I get with the square/spike point for trimming around my mustache and sideburns.
Just another lesson learned.

I prefer a French point but it's more a question of look than anything else at that stage...

Interesting. I have a French point and a wisked square staring me down that need to get cleaned up and honed. Methinks I'll get my technique and setup down with my round points first before I take that plunge.

Obvious disadvantage being that they are pointy and can cut you, what is the main advantage to the square point? Is it intended for trimming?

Thanks.

I nicked the inside of a nostril with a square point yesterday, I was touching up the mustache area and as a few whiskers suddenly gave way, well you get the picture.

My favourite razor is a square point, I have round points as well but hardly ever use them. I once nicked my ear with the square point and it bled quite a bit - since then I've only ever had cuts from the blade itself when I've hit a spot etc. Now waiting for another square point to arrive :)
Just a case of watching what you are doing and being careful (especially around the ears lol)
