You’ve done exactly the same as me. Took a disassembled merkur 37C and brush. Bought blades locally and enjoying my daily shaves.SOTD 16 October, 2019
My plans in travelling to Japan for the present research trip, carrying my trusty Merkur 34C HD and planning to purchase blades in a drug store paid off - I was able to walk away from the first one I tried, a Welcia chain store, with a 10pk of Feather Hi-Stainless. View attachment 1026465
With that in hand, I am in for three weeks of proper shaving, as opposed to the cartridge path I usually take when travelling by air (since I never check baggage). TSA didn't even look at my disassembled Merkur and shaving brush, which I had packed separately, together in a baggie, from the rest of my toiletries. Game on! So pleased that I both get to shave well this trip, and test out Feathers, which I've not used before.
I'll refrain from posting other SOTDs while I'm in Japan, since they'll all be the same (except the shave count on the blades would increment, I guess). I'm outfitted with one of my favorite and best performing creams, Musgo Real, and another fine Fine aftershave. Lathered very nicely today, and the Feather performed according to script! (nice and close!)
Thankful for the ubiquitous Feather - and that I know I'll not have to cartridge again when on research travel to Japan
Today's details:
Pre-shave: hot shower and hot towel wrap
Razor: Merkur 34C HD
Blade: Feather Hi-Stainless (#1)

Refreshments: (it's 20:00 in Japan right now, and this is an uncharacteristic-for-me evening shave) Kiuchi Brewery Nest Beer Pale Ale
