What's new

so WHILST doing some book research...

i came across this nugget. not going in the book.

the whole gem micromatic FLAT ON THE FACE thing? notice how it pretty much dosent work, ever?

they did it to increase blade sales.

Poor shave=bad blade.

Bad blade=consumer buys a new pack.

Consumers buying new packs=increased blade sales.

Poor shave=bad blade.
Bad blade=consumer buys a new pack.

Surely this strategy stops being effective after the second pack of blades?
New pack, shave is still poor = consumer concludes that razor does not work and buys a razor from the competition?

Only if customer reads the instructions.

Instructions are for cartridge users!

Very interesting tidbit, Dave. Want to share any details on how you came across it:biggrin:
Thanks for the all the effort you're putting in, hope the book is coming along smoothly for you, still can't wait to see it!

I would assume it was in some inter company correspondence. I can't see that ever flying today, though, because a marketing analyst would have shot that down in a minute.

That sounds like a good theory to me.

So Dave, now that you've discovered that the Micromatic was only an innocent pawn in some evil genius' money making scam, any chance you'll lighten up on them?

no sooner spoken than broken

and youre welcome :001_smile

I'm sorry, I don't get it.

blue blades were poor. very poor. surely a user could have written off the whole thing if he really wanted to.

the whole MM strategy was in a word: desperation. even though they sold very well from that period on it wasnt hard to see that gillette had w/o a doubt come out on top.

I am amazed at what we learn here. Is there a more correct shaving angle?

For me, and most guys from what I pick up here, using the Micromatic with the head tilted slightly off the skin woks better. Flat against the face often results in less than spectacular shaves.

The exact answer I would expect from the king of the tight lip:wink:

I take it that your silence on my second question means "no"

+1

the earliest MM ads call for the angle to be just off the face like the 1912 models.

I used my 1912 tonight with new blades. It was a bit aggressive. I have used it with CVS blades before and gotten good results. I will have to experiment with the angle a bit.
