Silica gel

My Dovo Astrale is coming back from Lynn now In a coating of oil, thank God.

When I first tried it I stroped it across a towel after use to dry it, and it was dry. Not bone-dry, but there were no visible water spots; it just hadn't been put through a dehydrator or anything.

There was some minor, minor staining on the blade face the next day. Something easy to clean up but still. Wow. Sensitive razor huh?

So I've considered keeping it in its case after drying it, with a packet of desiccant (silica gel). This should keep the atmosphere it's stored in rather arid. I've also coated it with Tuf-Glide and will do so again after rinsing the oil off it (so I can use it) upon its return.

Has anyone tried this?

I store all my str8s in a cigar box with a silica besed defumidifier. It was $8 from gander mountain. They can be heated in the oven to reset them. So far so good and I live in south florida where it's always humid. Even today. The system seems to work pretty well so far.

You may also do like I do...

After a shave wash the blade with warm (not hot) running water and wipe with clean dry tissue paper (don’t use the towel because the towel may already be saturated with moisture if you just had a shower). Wrap the tissue paper around the spine side of the blade enough to cover the blade, wrap your palm around the spine and pinch the blade as close to the edge as possible with your thumb and middle finger and wipe length wise from heel to point… do this twice (use another sheet of dry tissue paper) and don’t worry, you wont blunt the edge…

You may strop the razor a few times so the oil in the strop will coat the edge to help prevent tarnish on the edge.
